Re: Running dogs

People have been doing that for years. My personal opinion is I like running dog but further back in a dogs ancestry. Most people want the speed and endurance that comes from running dog blood but the downside is you sometimes lose nose, treeing and even tracking ability. By that I mean they swing t...

They don't run during the day like Bobcat, although I have hit hot tracks around noon. Lots of cold trailing if you day hunt .

Re: Supplements

I always carry water with me and the dogs drink a lot of it . Some dogs are more prone to get over heated than others ,just like people. I even carry it in the winter time .You might be surprised how much water a dog will drink on cold froze over days.

Re: Breeding emphasis

Bowieknife50, I'll bet Nolte will tell you the same thing but the more dogs you work with and observe over the years the more you'll learn.Dogs like people are basically the same but different, about the time you think you've got them figured out an oddball will come along and teach you something new.

Re: Breeding emphasis

Lawdawgharris, you're right about a cross nicking but to complicate matters I've heard of guys making a second cross after the first was so successful and the 2nd cross was a flop.Go figure ! I've also seen culls bred and a top dog come out of it . I've seen good ones bred and outside of 1 or 2 pups...

Re: Breeding emphasis

Good hounds are rare no matter how you breed. Its been said only 10% of the total hound population are actually a top hunting dog and I agree with that. I believe both Male and female are equally important but as a bobcat hunter I can tell you finding 2 top dogs to breed is very difficult and then if...

Re: How to leave the tree..

It depends on the dogs.I have had many(most) that I can call off the tree but have had a couple I had to lead all the way to the truck.i don't think toning will hurt them but I've never done it and probably never will.

Re: Bobcat bite infection

Start them on Tetracycline before they swell up. I put them on it as soon as I get home. Leave them on it for 7 days and you'll never know they were bitten unless it's in a joint. or something. I've never heard of a dog developing an immunity to a cat bite,if that were possible you would think they ...

Re: A Legend Passes

I wrote stories in FULL CRY for probably about 30 years.I always loved to read Del's column because he could paint a story in your mind .He was not only a great hunter but a great writer as well. I remember getting my magazine and eagerly turning to Del's article. Lo and Behold! Del went from tellin...

Re: Young Redbone

Red is progressing nicely.Just trees naturally with no false trees so far. He has a cold nose and lots of hustle. He has some quirks but no serious faults. Opens good with Raisen but is tight by himself. Runs a jump track like a running dog with a big bawl mouth. I hope to get him rigging soon but ha...

Re: Split Race

One of the most difficult tasks a beginning houndman should learn is the need to cull. Give your dog a good chance to make the grade but when they start showing an obvious fault it's time for them to go. If you want to catch game you have to make some hard decisions. If you just enjoy being outdoors...
