Re: New Bobcat Season MN

Used to start around thanksgiving and run until the first few days of the new year. We don’t have much for snow until the end of December. Now it is going to start right after Christmas and run until the 26 of January.

Re: Treed

Maybe I will tell the kids that one when they are adults. I wouldn’t want my kids on that ice or up a tree.

Re: Treed

I have definitely climbed a few trees. The best tree climbing story I have was on a November coon hunt when I was 16.
It was after midnight on a school night and my buddy asked if I had time for one more spot. I said sure. We went a few miles to the next area and released three dogs and waited. In ...

Re: Starting a 13 week old Pup

One of the best things about this season is that I have zero excuses to leave my kids at home. I have taken most of my kids raccoon hunting over the years and they have loved it. Either staying up late or just seeing how quiet and peaceful the nights can be out there.
The last few years with my ...

Re: Starting a 13 week old Pup

Day one was two ten minute sessions learning to heel on lead and load into and out of the dog box. Each followed by thrilling exposure to a caged farm cat for just a few minutes and then the kennel with the cat was walked out of the area.
The kids played with them in and outside the house until all ...

Starting a 13 week old Pup

I lost both my coon/bobcat hounds last year and we are purchasing a female pup today. My question is since the snow is here is there benefit to putting her first four months of work exclusively on bobcats before showing her coon in the spring. Should I bother letting her run barn cat or just walk ...

Re: MN opening soon

Yes, I hunt mostly in Cass and Wadena Counties. Are you hunting that area as well?

Thanks Allen

MN opening soon

Just curious if there are any other people out there that are anxiously awaiting our seasons start here in MN. I am optimistic with the lower harvest in the areas I hunt last year. I was able to find several cats last year when the weather was favorable. Hoping deer season pressure was felt by our ...

Daughters First Coon

My 7 year old daughter shots this guy out last night. She hit it twice out of 7 shots. The last shot in the neck brought it down. I had four of our eight kids out following our two hounds. They ran them pretty well. The run started in the corn and went through a farm site and across the road to ...

Re: Hunting Blown Down Timber

I think the hard work and difficult journey is what is driving me. I have never put in so many hours towards something with out success and enjoyed failure as I do chasing after these smart cats. I learn more each trip even if I don't get to run one cat being in cat country is teaching me things ...

Re: Hunting Blown Down Timber

David, thank you for the nice words. I think my lack of success makes me respect the game all the more.
My 9 year old came along on my first hunt this season when it was warmer than zero. The first track we followed I broke through the ice up to my waist in mud. Lucky I was only a few hundred yards ...

Re: Hunting Blown Down Timber

Thanks Joe. My dogs are good coon dogs that are slowly learning that cat game. This was the longest race they have had yet. It wasn't until we had multiple track though the same are that they couldn't figure it out. The circle was getting tighter too. I will catch one eventually.

Re: Hunting Blown Down Timber

It could have been in there somewhere. We left that area and returned multiple times. I would think if he holed up the dogs would have pinned him.
