Re: Hunting terrier
We had an Airedale in the mid '90s when I was in my early teens in Oklahoma. He came from a guy that used to cross them on his coonhounds, said they were good dogs for fighting a coon in deep water. He was a family/yard dog as we only hunted bird dogs back then but was tougher than nails and loyal ...

Re: Jumping out bobcats
I have no experience doing this with cats but I did run a few coons this past summer and knocked a couple out for the dogs to re-run. With my good dog it did not seem to affect her in anyway, she stays treed as long as she needs to no matter how long I take getting there. With my pups it was a ...

Re: Afternoon cat hunting
Dhostetler, I always enjoy reading your comments and get a lot of useful information from what you contribute. Sounds like you have some nice dogs that catch a lot of game. I agree I should put my dogs on a track with the expectation that they will catch whatever game they are running, however I and ...

Re: Afternoon cat hunting
Mark, sounds like you have it mastered(meet at 4, cat caught and back at home in time for dinner). I know it doesn't happen like that often but I bet it's happened more than a few times for David to mention it. That's why I read this forum, cause guys like you catch cats and try to help guys like me ...

Re: Afternoon cat hunting
David, I always enjoy reading your posts, you have a lot of good advice. I think I'll start training my wife's cat how to get home from 2 miles away so it'll be ready when I get a new puppy lol. She would be pissed! I didn't know that cats would move much at all during daylight hours. I will start ...

Re: Afternoon cat hunting
Thank you all for your advice!
Pegleg and Twist, I agree any kind of having my dogs out hunting or trailing is far better than being at home in a pen. Like twist said the more they trail the better they'll get and from what I've seen from my two young dogs the desire to catch once jumped won't be ...

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
Rezdog, I agree the deep snow really slowed my dogs down on a cold trail.
I always thought snow was great, it has been a big help getting my dogs started trailing but the DEEPER snow just seems to make things slower and getting around more difficult. Most years it snows here and is gone in a day ...

Afternoon cat hunting
I get off work early sometimes(2 or 3 in the afternoon) and like to load the dogs and go road them and look for cat tracks in the snow I know my chances of finding a hot track are slim but we can usually find a cold one from that morning or the night before that they can move. Is it bad for my dogs ...

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
So here's what I found out about my original question. Seems that the cats right around my house will still move just as much in 18" of snow as they will in 2" after a storm but they seemed to be staying close to the roads that were bladed(lots of oilfield roads around that are kept cleared) and ...

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
Catdog,
Diva is doing great, couldn't have found a better dog to help get me started. She is an absolute pleasure to have around. She caught a lion on a rock ledge by herself about a week ago. My young dogs got left behind in the rocks and I don't know how she got through but she did and had the ...

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
I guess I kinda answered my own question this weeknd. I didn't make it to the mountain I wanted to so I don't know what it was like but I'm sure the snow was bad deep. We had a good 18" or more in the high desert country where I live (juniper, piñon, sage, and sandstone) so I figured I better just ...

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
Skip, I'm really bad about taking time to get pictures but I will get some better pics of Jett tomorrow, hopefully of him treeing a cat. He really has been a fun dog to start and I'm fairly sure is going to make a cat dog. He hunts hard and is a smart dog.

Re: How deep is to deep?(Snow)
Pegleg and dhostetler great stories, I never get tired of reading stuff like that. This bobcat section is by far the best on here.
I guess it makes sense they would stay up the mountain if they can still find a meal or move down where there's more rabbits and rodents if they had to. I was also ...

How deep is to deep?(Snow)
First off I want to say thanks to all you real deal bobcat hunters that share your wealth of knowledge with us rookies. I grew up around bird dogs in central Oklahoma in the 90's when the quail population was doing good(I hear it's coming back). My dad raised and trained GSP and Brittany Spaniels ...
