Is anyone running tree dogs in Southern California? I normally hunt at night for fox and coon and do a few out of state trips in the winter.
If you want to hunt and prefer to stay on the right side of the law (hard to do in California) shoot me a message.

Re: Age of track
Lawdawg, some questions about scent we’ll never have an answer to. I am going to test your theory the next chance I get. Unfortunately, they don’t cross the road much when I have dogs in the truck.

Re: Age of track
I’ve seen one cut loose out of a roll cage after 4 good hounds had a go at it. Turned it loose expecting a dog train and dogs only got one bark in. These are dogs that can tree their own now. Explain that to me.

Re: Getting Right on Top of them
They are slick critters no doubt. Two lessons I’ve learned are never put dogs down on the day you drive home or if your on a schedule and never assume where the track will end.

Re: Getting Right on Top of them
If I had all day I would have circled out but like you said it was tough because we were on the rim. I think we were literally right on top of him. I don't think I'll ever put dogs down on the day I'm supposed to head home again.

Getting Right on Top of them
Not much going on with this page so I figured I might as well post about what I've been chewing on lately.
I've had on a few different occasions where we trailed up to a set of bluffs or even big rock piles thinking I was getting close to jumping one and the track seemed to die right about where I ...

Trailing through burn scar
Some of my favorite areas have been hit by fires over the years. Was curious how long it takes for trailing conditions to come back and what some of the factors would be. I’m guessing heavy rain and regrowth would help.

Re: What’s your longest dry spell?
It took me 2 years to catch my first one I caught another 4 months after that. I've only caught a few coon and fox since then. That was over a year ago. I've had a lot of fun since then and my dogs hunt hard. Finding the right track in the desert is tough but when you do and your dogs have been ...

Re: Starting pups on e-collar
My thought has always been e collars are for reinforcing what the dog/pup already knows. Once your pup knows the basics then slowly introduce the shock. I teach tone and here/come at the same time.

Re: To Much Drive
I was about 800 yards from the pup and maybe a half mile from the other two. This was a strange ending to a race as I'm confident my dogs are running to catch. So I'm not saying they were at their threshold but for reasons unknown the race ended at that mileage. A full day of trailing could be any ...

Re: To Much Drive
Well said all. If you had to put a number to it how long of a race through rough country would you set the bar for a dog with a high level of drive and heart? I’m talking miles from a well conditioned dog. I had a tough one the other day and had one pup quit at 9 miles and start back tracking and ...

Re: To Much Drive
I guess drive doesn’t mean much unless you have the intelligence to go with it. This particular dog needs an extra lock on his kennel and shows signs of decent intelligence.
