Africa Anti Poaching Hounds

I came across these short videos and thought it was worth sharing. I thought our hounds had a dangerous job...

Re: To Much Drive

I was about 800 yards from the pup and maybe a half mile from the other two. This was a strange ending to a race as I'm confident my dogs are running to catch. So I'm not saying they were at their threshold but for reasons unknown the race ended at that mileage. A full day of trailing could be any n...

Re: To Much Drive

Well said all. If you had to put a number to it how long of a race through rough country would you set the bar for a dog with a high level of drive and heart? I’m talking miles from a well conditioned dog. I had a tough one the other day and had one pup quit at 9 miles and start back tracking and th...

Re: To Much Drive

I guess drive doesn’t mean much unless you have the intelligence to go with it. This particular dog needs an extra lock on his kennel and shows signs of decent intelligence.

To Much Drive

I had a bob treed in the night this summer. Dogs were looking at the cat from the top of a bluff and were actually treeing from above it. It looked like the cat jumped from the bluff into the tree. Long story short the cat jumped tree and one of my dogs jumped off the bluff after it. My stomach drop...

Re: Training bear and cougar hounds! HELP

I'd recommend looking at my old post and the responses i got! 2 years ago I was in the same boat as you with one started dog and 2 pups. I asked a lot of questions on this forum that at the time I thought were reasonable questions but now looking back they were really stupid. Since then I've caught ...

Re: Turning a Track Around

Al I have a question. Do you think those hunters that want to decide for their dogs about when to turn a track have as good a set of dogs as the hunters that leave it up to the dogs to decide? I’m to the point now that where I’ll trust my dogs 9/10 but every now and then I’ll get involved and try t...

Re: Hawaii hog hunters

Yeah that’s how it started with me too. I got hooked up with these guys from a friend of a friend but let me know when you go and I’ll see what I can do. They ran whippets/cur crosses and pointer/bulldog crosses. We just walked the jungle and the dogs snatched up piglets and a couple small hogs. The...

Re: Hawaii hog hunters

I know a guy who’s got a pack out there. He took me out when I was on vacation. He hunts mostly private land. I heard the public land is tough.

Turning a Track Around

I was out with a friends free casting both our packs through some cat country. Our dogs struck a track and they ran it pretty fast for maybe a mile or two. The track ended on a well vegetated hill side that was screaming bedding area to me. We came to the conclusion that the dogs had run the track b...

Re: Kidney failure

There was a podcast on houndsmen XP where they had a sled dog racer/vet on their talking about dog nutrition. After hearing all he had to say I ended up picking up a bottle of Maltodextrin to add to my dogs water after long hunts in the heat. I haven't used it a whole lot but from what this guy was ...

Re: Trailing in the desert

I've experienced this a few times myself. Just a few weeks ago I thought we had one jumped and my dogs were running and opening hard but it took us up and over a boulder field pinnacle, skirted the sunny side (I think) of the ridge through some gnarly rocks then came back around the shady side. It t...

Re: Split Race

Lace up your boots, strap on your pack and go with your dogs. If you are relying on your GPS to make finer corrections you are too late and causing confusion. Do not mistake cold nosed for sticky & independent. Sometimes being the pack leader means going with them step for step. They can learn ...

Re: Split Race

Sometimes there is an addition by subtraction. Taking a dog out of the mix can really help define things. But I would strongly advise you not to trust your dogs but to always question and overanalyze them. Dogs can’t lie but they can do a damn good job of makin a liar out of us! If you trust them a...

Re: 5 lions together

Those lions in that part of the state are inbreed. The section of wilderness in that area has the lions locked in by freeways and cities. There is a massive lion population and no outlets for young lions to disperse. There have been several attacks in that area and lions that don't show normal lion ...
