Re: Foxdogs
That is a very interesting observation Perk. I am going to be paying attention to that for sure. For my particular discipline, two of the hardest things to breed for are how much bite my bay dogs have and the size of my catch dogs. There is such a fine line on too much and too little in those two ...

Re: Foxdogs
Perk have you ever noticed a difference when crossing the families when your line is the sire to his gyp vs his line being the sire bred to one of your gyps? For example is was told when I was younger to use a male hound over the cur gyp if wanted silent or less mouthy pups, that doing it the ...

Re: Coonhounds and Bloodlines
I think these dogs are just like people in the sense of personality. I know people that have both parents being very verbal and outgoing types. There isn’t a meek or tentative bone in them yet their kid is very reserved and almost reclusive. I think you said it in your description of your dog. His ...

Re: Coonhounds and Bloodlines
Muleman I’d say he was mean because he the blood of a mad bear in his mouth and just never could wash it, OR his kind of mean was created and not genetic. It’s hard to say without knowing his background and circumstances. I was given a competition coon dog years ago. He had been banned from hunts ...

Re: Foxdogs
Perk, some people definitely just have an eye for a good animal some just have a natural gift and understanding of animals. I know a guy that didn’t have any mentors to speak of. That’s one of the reasons his life has taken the road it has, his only examples were bad examples. When it came to dogs ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
I have and always will say that a good dog is the dog that makes the person buying the feed happy. I also say there are two types of good dogs, the one that makes you happy and the one that makes me happy. It doesn’t make one right or wrong just a difference in flavors. I’m 53 and I’ve been around ...

Re: Foxdogs
Yes and also knowing what you’ve created is a cheat sheet. Sometimes certain qualities or characteristics accompany certain others, they run hand and hand so to speak. Those type of things are the things that only the creator would know unless he shared it with someone else.

Re: Foxdogs
The number of good families of dogs that faded away after the creator is gone is very high. It goes back to different people having different standards and a different eye. Many don’t have the strength or ability to make the hard decisions that these people have made to create the line.

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
Dewey that makes sense to me. I agree we do need to appreciate our blessing of being able to hunt these dogs no matter what discipline. I bet your pups turn out. Keep us posted, I’m interested to hear more about them.

Re: Foxdogs
You are exactly on point with that Perk. I’ve been around some of those Clay dogs that my buddy has. I really like their dispositions. They aren’t quarlsome or ill in any way that I’ve seen. They seem to handle well, at least around his place anyway. The ones I can picture in my head right now hand ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
I agree guys. You can’t get it if it isn’t in there. It’s funny that another buddy and I were talking the other day and we said the same thing about taking dogs to the woods. You have to be going to the woods with the intention of training your dogs. If catching game is your focus then your going to ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
I totally think a good dog man can make a decent dog out of about any pup. Give that dog man a pup out of just anything vs a pup that has purpose and intent behind his breeding and there is a dramatic difference 9 1/2 out of ten times in the way that they get it done. If a dog that is just good ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
Nothing is full proof for sure. I was just having a conversation earlier with a real good dog man. I have a young dog, about 11 months old, that is a 1/4 outside blood. She’s pretty dang impressive for her age and the things she’s already doing in only her third hunt. So far all signs point to the ...

Re: Foxdogs
Man that’s terrible to not get any more pups out of him than that. I’ve made the same mistakes Perk. Not anymore though because I know these dogs and their tendencies well enough, as soon as gyp shows me a few key things in the woods, I get a litter out of her and then I start hunting her hard. I ...

Re: Foxdogs
I was the same with early influences. My dad was god with dogs and all but one of my hunting buddies was old enough to be my dad or granddad. I sure miss those guys. They sure took a lot of valuable knowledge with them. I’m 53 and now I’m the older guy in the crowd. It’s nice to have young guys for ...
