Re: Deer Hunting With Hounds

Years ago we were running a grey fox in some thickets, fox came out and went down a grassy path 25 years then back into thick creek bottom, when the dogs hit the path there was a deer that had just kicked up and was in the middle of the pack, ran down path and turned into creek bottom same place as ...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Al, I don't wanna get in an pissing match over whose terrian is worse, seen that argument too much, but I will say Belle sounds like one tough old gal! Glad you got to reminisce about her to others!

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Id say Terrain mostly, Al, id also ask did belle trail up and jump the deer she caught or run it from jumped fresh out the bed? usually deer in my country get a little head start... seen fair share of deer caught before, one the breeders i respect most highly said if a dog runs a deer for 2-3 hours ...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Mule, I don't live directly in or hunt a ton of crop country but have hunted it plenty, I am mostly a woods (thick cutover and briars, rolling hills not flat land) hunter based on where I live and have permission to hunt. Those guys who do tend to like a dog to be a little more heads up than I like ...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Mule, I ain't talking about just a swinger. Those that we would see in a fox pen style setting or a speed and drive winner. I'm talking about hounds that run the front and want to catch game and don't let others get between them. I agree a swinger can put gaps in a race and usually don't hold the tr...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Beebout-it I believe when dogs are purchased by new handlers, potentially in new territory and with a new pack they may not run immediately. I've owned several dogs that would t run if a strange dog was out there. I just gave away a couple in the past year that they did not run for the new owners. N...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Mule, front end dogs are not content being in 2nd place, they are gonna run hard as they can to be up there, no whether it's to be in front or to try to gain ground to catch the quarry, or it doesn't like the way another dogs butt looks in it's face or the scent of another dog overtop the quarry he ...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

34 trips hunting is the longest Ive personally carried one before she started to go with the dogs. I knew her parents and that she was outta the right stuff so I was more patient. Had a couple others that took better than a dozen trips before they started at least following the dogs. Can't ever reme...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

Al I wasn't saying that they didn't continue to im prove on certain things once they came into their prime, I think 4, 5, 6 tend to be a dogs peak performance seen some that did more than their fair share up to 10 yr old, not many got that kinda lasting power when you constantly throwing young athle...

Re: Dogs,Dogs,Dogs

I think as I grow older I become more patient with my hounds and their development. I will credit part of that to kenneling with my father who is slower to cull than me, so I have been forced to see development take a couple years instead of the couple months I would like. Some of the better dogs I'...

Re: There is a war in Britain regarding fox hunts.

If this is the topic you wish to discuss and find sympathy to your view point like beebout-it suggested your in the wrong area, and around the wrong groups of people. I don't think anyone on here is looking to shed a bad light on any group of real hound hunters, especially those which hunt in anothe...

Re: Pure or cross bred

Mule man I agree the best option always know the dogs you breeding too, or 2nd best option is know the owner and how he assesses hounds, and trust his word. I breed usually in my own pen, and rarely get pups from others and then from only a select few. I generally raise a litter or 2 a year and star...

Re: Pure or cross bred

I think that predictability is the major benefit of line bred hounds, as Sass mentioned it limits the number of genes that can influence puppies. I am at a point in my life where I like line bred dogs or closely related dogs. I think we should always look at traits when breeding, why would I breed a...

Re: What makes a true “dog man/ woman/ hunter”

Mule, in the scenerio you just listed the red dog would get ahead of your pack, by 1/4 mile, the pack would run same track behind him and when you picked him up the pack would carry on as if nothing had happened. But in actuality something was happening the whole time, the game was running farther a...
