Re: mother line

David, in the not too old days many fox hound packs (European breeders) sent upwards of 200 puppies out to walk each year. The pack size always stayed the same.

Re: mother line

Seems like people always try to make things way more complicated than they really are. If you want to learn how to breed dogs all you need to do is look around.

Most everything in nature produces way more offspring than needed. Only a small percentage survive long enough to reproduce themselves ...

Re: What genetic traits to watch out for ...

Whenever the subject of linebreeding or inbreeding comes up people always say you have to cull hard. Why don't they give that advise for any kind of breeding?

I spose I've probably put more than 1000 puppies on the ground and I'm not done yet, I don't know much but here's what works for me ...

Re: Define "Brains" in a Hound?

I remember sitting in class in high school. The teacher would explain some new concept and I would be thinking "OK, I got it already!" But not everybody did. The teacher would go over it again, slower this time. Then answer a bunch of questions and go over it again and again.

They lost me right ...

Re: Garmin & Tri-Tronics

Hey guys. Been a while since I have posted on here.

This is a good post, can't say I disagree with any of it. Modern electronics surely help you get the most out of a hound.

I take a different point of view than most of you. I'm hunting a breeding a pack of beagles to hunt hare. I won't use GPS ...

Another deer breaking topic

Seen where many of you want your hounds to run good game before they ever get shocked for running bad game. Good plan and one that I have tried to stick to for many years.

The last few years I have had several dogs that were extra hard to break off deer. All of these dogs were very smart and go ...

Re: Walker Problems.... Anyone have some good advice

Guess I should explain my post a little better. I've used caged coons a lot. It's what everyone says you should do. Took me a while to figure out that much of what everyone says you should do is either not helpful or just plain bad advice.

Folks like caged coons because it's fun to see your pup ...

Re: Walker Problems.... Anyone have some good advice

Show them 2 Plotts an empty cage and they will probably go nuts.

You asked for advise so I'll give you some. Throw that cage away. Does a lot more harm than good. All your doing is training your dogs to bark at cages

Re: how many dogs do u need to effectively run bobcats?

I'm no cat hunter but here's my 2 cents.
So much depends on why you are out there. Is killing cats your main goal, or are you hooked on the feeling you get from hearing a big pack of hounds locked on and closing in? Are your cats tree game or running game? If you are hunting tree dogs, it don't make ...

Re: feeding game meat?

I used to talk smart and say the same things you guys say about feeding deer to my hounds. Been doing it for more than 30 years. I'm not so sure anymore.

I trap lots of pocket gophers in the summer and feed them all to my beagles. Tastes like candy if you read how they act when they get one. Those ...

Re: Deep Dry Snow....

Good posts David. I can add a couple pointers for upper midwest cat hunters.

If that track in the road is so fresh there is steam rising from it, keep the dogs in the box. Cat season isn't open yet or it just closed.

If it looks like it's three days old and the dog looks at you like he's thinking ...

Re: How many hounds to a cat?

I'm just a hare hunter but I can answer some of these questions.

How do you lead 16 dogs out of the woods? Just curious.

Train them to follow you. It's not hard, even with hard going dogs. It just takes time, but hey, what else do you do when you can't hunt? I almost never use a lead anymore and ...

Re: fell hounds

Fell hounds are hounds used to hunt fox in the fells (mountains). Because of the country they are mostly hunted on foot as opposed to the packs that are followed on horseback.

Re: cat dogs in off season?

I run beagles, I'm a big believer in keeping them in shape. I turn them out every morning in a 2 acre pen. I also walk them a lot, just like this video from the Iroquois hunt.
