Re: deep snow hunting for cats
The last couple of winters we had the deepest snow that I have ever hunted in lower country in NW Montana. I had a bobcat race that was a split race 2 dogs treed one the other 3 dogs put on over 15 miles pretty much jumped all the way. I got a buddy to help me and we managed to sled to within sever...

Re: Springtime Idaho bear hunt help
Whiskey Z Idaho gets hunted hard in roaded areas and a lot of hound hunters run off baits. Good bait placement can keep bears from hitting roads. Units 10 and 12 have a lot of bears but it's steep country which is harder for dogs to pressure a bear to climb then in flatter country. Yes you might hav...

Re: Young dog starting to strike
Thanks for the replies guys. I have another question that might be a dumb one. After the snow hits, if this pup rigs lions, will it help her rig them when there isnt any snow? Im sure the scent stays lower when theres snow right? Im sorry if this question is so dumb it doesnt deserve an answer lol....

Re: Young dog starting to strike
You can do long term damage in striking ability if you come down to hard early on in trash striking in my opinion. It seems you may be hauling around this dog quite a bit and not hunting it if you only ran it twice??? I would only haul the dog around when you are planning to hunt it/turn loose. The ...

Re: Montana Wolves
If wolves are coming to the sound of dogs treeing, then why in the world wouldn't you set them up by purposefully getting your dogs to tree when you know wolves are in the area then kill the dam things when they come in. You do that a few times and the rest will quickly associate treeing hounds wit...

Re: Lead dog male or female?
I need to quit hunting with people so I can project an image of having perfect dogs. When people hunt with me they realize what a disaster me & my dogs can be. lol

Re: Lead dog male or female?
So is the dog that leads em into the skunk first the lead dog,or is it the first dog that leads em out? And what percentage of each are males or females? 12 more hours here!!!!!!! :) It gets pretty complicated..... The first dog to get fried on 18 would probably be the lead dog out of the skunk cat...

Re: Lead dog male or female?
Paul, You should be forever grateful. There is a piece of Idaho you would've never seen had it not been for June. What better motivation to hike a half mile off the the road down a 1000 foot hole than a bayed skunk.

Re: Lead dog male or female?
Nicole: females are more susceptible to cancer. I also think females start going downhill quicker with age and are more likely to become more bitchy with age. That may just be my personal experience and not the standard. I have had males still catching there own big game at age 12 & 13. Never ha...

Re: Lead dog male or female?
The buddy hndhunter is referring to is me. In my conversation with him I meant all time best dog versus lead dog. In my opinion if you talk with various hound hunters most that have hunted for a number of years the best dog they ever owned was a male. I think females are quicker and easier to train ...

Re: Pack size for bear hunting
You should definitely run your dogs with other dogs that catch bear. You can do all the training you want which is good but those dogs need to learn run to catch. The more bear trees they are under the harder they will run. Yes there could be negative impacts to run with strange dogs but the benefit...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?
Not long after I got into hounds I spent $1800 on a West coast bobcat dog that ended up not being at all as advertised. As mentioned before I don't think the guy was purposely ripping me off he was selling a dog out of a pack and just didn't realize what he was selling. I had the dog less than a yea...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?
Dewey, I agree with everything you posted you may have missed the part I stated referring to hunting bare ground. I fully realize that it takes a lot more knowledge of bobcat sign on bare ground than snow hunting. My best bear dog will quit a jumped bear race to cold trail a bobcat has even left bea...
