Re: Feeding
I've got both extremes. Young plott if he's breathing he is gaining weight. . He holds his weight well even with mild running I'm allowing him to do. . The other extreme is an xbreed cross that I have to up his food intake three times when the weather gets cold . I can keep him thick even when hard ...

Re: The demise of the hound
Picked up two more sense I last posted. Went to Virginia and picked up a pocahontas plott. Young and still got a lot of pup in him we'll see. But had a male given to me by an older fellow that wanted to get started again but decided that with no one younger to go with it was a bad idea. Walker head ...

Re: MULES,HORSES AND HOUNDS
Hounds are easy I buy the feed I build the kennels of buy the wormer like haul them to the woods to do what they love to do. What I say goes. Don't mistreat your dogs but show them what you want and be consistent with corrections. They will come around. Horse or mule is another thing entirely either ...

Re: The demise of the hound
Perk don't think anymore about it no offense taken. The reason I don't know where to get those dogs anymore is because the men that raised them are dead or have been shipped off to the homes for worn out old houndsmen.

Re: The demise of the hound
Coon hunt mostly I've had a few dogs over the years that would put a cat up but only in the lower areas. Once they hit the rocks the odds of catching dropped to zero. I'm planning on one or two straight coon dogs and at least two cat dogs . My old male is hell on coon at one time he was pretty good ...

Re: The demise of the hound
The dogs I've looked at have been from here up the road down the road and from east and west of the road. I wasn't trying to discuss the different abilities of dogs in one patch of woods to the corn fields fifty miles up the interstate. I'm talking about the breeds in general. I haven't found the ...

Re: The demise of the hound
I've never had or seen a good squirrel dog . Tried it a few times just for shits and giggles but never to a point that I was making enough headway to continue. The only line I have kept for the last 25 years were my beagles fast loose on the line but quick to check. My son wants to refine our pack ...

Re: The demise of the hound
I'm having the same problem from regestered and non regestered dogs I'm thinking that with the rise in population of comp dogs it has diluted the blood we have locally to a level that I'm not sure it will ever come back. I'll find what I'm looking for I have no doubt about that. It's just going to ...

The demise of the hound
Typed all this yesterday then somehow deleted it before posting so let's try again. I have breed a few litters of pups over the years but most of my dogs came from people who were ether fed up trying or had big hopes and never got started. . I understand that there are breeders who have proven ...

Re: Short Rough Pack Trip
Hell Mike I think there are to many people. Can't seem to go anywhere and not run into them. It wouldn't be so bad but 99 percent of the time its the type I don't want to talk to.

Re: Getting started on coon hunting
Don't worry about coon slayer it's easy to figure out he is an anti hunter that somehow got on the site. I've met houndsmen that had little formal education but never one that was that much of an idiot. Sounds like you're having fun that's all that matters.

Re: Best Dogs...
Maybe i put to much of the bad and not enough of the good.He could fly on a warm track and he was sharp. When other dogs got hung up he figured out a way to get over under or around something so he could get back on it again. Not a rough bone in his body when it came to another dog.The only time he ...

Re: What makes a good houndsmen?
You have a point with that, if I was half as good as I thought I was when I was younger I would have been unstoppable.
