There Is a difference between hard feet and tough feet. Hard feet will become brittle and break off going through them rocky places, therefore a shoe will be required. A tough foot will (rasp)itself keeping its natural shape and not requiring a shoe as often.

I have had one horse that I never had to shoe, yes a horse. And I rode that horse from when we got him at 3 until I sold him at 16. All three horses we have now, I've never had to put then on the rear. If you can get away with out shoeing at all that is the best. We do have to put them on the front ...

when riding mules you need a good britchen, and make sure it has good leather. I was coming form off a hogs back and my britchen broke, within in the next few feet my saddle was on the mules neck and the only thing keeping me on was a hand full of his tail until I could get him turned up hill to ...
