Re: how old to start on bear
Keep hunting them like you been doing. For me thats to young. 18-24 months old has been the common thing for mine. For now find some bear & lead on the tracks. Petting & praising them with encouragement. Lead on hot & cold tracks. Walk the bear out of the bed as much as possible & hopefully they ...

Re: Shut down before I even got to start
Here in NC we have what we call reciprocal liscenses. NC is good to us, we have liberal seasons. Little short on land now days but typically within an hour of most of us we can find room on the mountain to breathe a little. What that reciprocal liscense means for you folks in adjoining states (SC ...

Re: Common Bear Hunting Oops'
Don't freak out, shoot for the right spot & finish what you start. There's many lines of hounds bred for well over 100 years to catch bears & even then its 1 in 1000 to have the guts, heart, sense & experience to handle a crippled up bear in the bush alone but a hound is the best place to start, IMO ...

Re: getting caught by FWP
Here it would boil down to where's the tracking equipment? Collars on dogs whether in the truck or on the ground would be hunting. Collars, equipment & dogs in the truck, may be considered hunting. Collars and equipment at home with dogs out to exercise is not hunting. A lawyer can work with that. A ...

Re: whats the best way to teach a dog to strike?
Some are born and some are made. One may not be as good as another but it can be done and used. I seen two similar methods to mine above. My method is similar. I prefer to involve my scent as little as possible. I've posted this before but I use a scent drag or piece of fresh hide and a fishing pole ...

Re: Where did all the cold nosed walkers go?
No secret I feel this way but you have to get back to finley river. I agree with who's said this already. Back in the day they were not the eye candy walker fanciers have come to love today. Some were sloppy built and coarse haired. Long, thick oily coat. Houndy type of dog. Barrel chested. Some ...

Re: what breed would you rather cross with a walker
Yeah and the part you may not get is that the MAN behind that dog determines whether it becomes a 4 or maybe a 5 but its got to be there first. A 3 is about the best they crop out for me. Sadly enough everybody's 3,4 & 5 aren't the same either.

Re: what breed would you rather cross with a walker
if certain traits set breeds apart then why not combine instead of saying boy i like my plotts grit but sure do wish they had the nose of a blue dog.
Thats because 2+2 does not equal a 4 in breeding anything. Scale of 0-4. 0 being worst and 4 being tops. 4+4 might get you a 2 or maybe even a 3 ...

would of loved to try it with a pack of Plotts
You missed the part above that Doogie where they said the wolverines "ran like hell". In case you bumped your head or are just truly struggling today that means the dog has to as well. It was almost a good pipe dream though but the plotts actually ...

Re: Houndsmen need your help in South Carolina
This should be a "no-brainer" to help SC fight for this right. Please help out and be COURTEOUS with GENUINE RESPECT. Remind them of the training value in a family atmosphere. As well as this is not much different than any other working animal event on display. Example rodeos, field trials, etc. If ...

To all with problems: If you can stand it, get you some guinea's. They'll forget about your dogs.
