Re: montana bear hunting with hounds
I agree with Bearkiller; What gives the other hunters more rights than a houndsmen? We pay the same taxes to support our government. We shed our blood the same as the other hunters and fishermen to defend our country, and we pay for the right to hunt by paying for our tags. Killing an animal, no ...

Learn How Dogs Communicate with Scent
Hear is an interesting paper on dogs ability to smell and how they communicate with their noses. The dog has over 200 million receptors in its nose or approximately 900 square inches of scent receptors. What they say is, that the longer the dogs nose, the better he can smell. Would this dispell the ...

Re: who makes the dog
I have another question for JC. If you beleive that man makes the dog, then explain to everyone why mans dogs often run deer, coyotes or skunks.
Did man teach him to do this too, or did the dog do it on his own ability?

Your right George, anything positive that you can give the dog at the end of the race is good, as long as it allows him to associate it with the scent when he starts the track.

Re: Do you beleive feeding your dog the kill, makes them bet
Oh! Let me clarify something about feeding your dog game meet. I am not saying that feeding your dogs game meet makes them better hunters.
What I'm trying to say is that feeding them some of the kill, immediately after the kill, allows them to associate the hunt with food, and that is what makes ...

Re: grity dogs
Smily, I've only owned one dog that was suicidal and that was a walker/kur. If I wasn't there to kill the bear, that dog would have been dead a long time ago.
I'm refering to either a bear fight on the ground or trying to get a wounded bear out of the woods. I hated like hell to turn my dogs on a ...

Any dog that trees game is a top dog, regardless of what it does or doesn't do.
I have to agree with you guys. Fearless dogs don't last long. I've had my share and lost them. They are probably one out of forty dogs with endless grit, but your lucky if they last a long time.

Want to know how your dogs think?
I found an interesting article that I think you should read. Hope you like it. It was written by a Dr. and talks about how dogs think in terms of images. You can take it or leav it, but I think it holds a lot of truth.

Re: Do you beleive feeding your dog the kill, makes them bet
Read dogs think with images in Bear Hunting, "Who makes the dog." Dogs think with images according to the Dr's research. If he is correct, then feeding the dogs the bears liver might give them the image of food. Dogs live for food. If this is true, then the dogs should form the image of food when on ...

Re: hood rigging
I use to hunt out of a van. The way I roaded the dogs was on a hinged platform that closed down as a grill gaurd when not in use. I can't be sure, but I kind of liked it, because I could watch the dogs as I drove. Secondly, The radiator fan sucked the air into the truck, and maybe it helped bring ...

Do you beleive feeding your dog the kill, makes them better?
I have found that feeding my hounds the liver of every kill has made them a better and more agressive hunter.
I would like to hear your take on this topic, and what you do to make your dogs a better hunter.

Re: who makes the dog
like I replied before, dogs learn from good experiences(being praised for treeing, catching, coming when called, ect.) bad experiences( electo shock therapy or similar for shitting on the floor, barking on chain, trashing out, ect.) the only reasoning in a dogs brain is mostly pain or praise. JMO I ...
