Re: Deep snow cat hunting, Anyone using a sled?

It will definitely help your access. Hit the higher wind blown and sun melted areas. The closer together these areas are the more chance of finding track.

If you stay on the north sides for walking the snow stays pretty frozen for ya. In the other areas a good set of snow shoes is required. And ...

Northern Arizona

I’m currently in cottonwood, just south of Sedona.

I don’t have dogs anymore and haven’t trailed behind dogs but once last season. If anyone would like some company I’d be more than happy to join you. I’m in decent shape and would just like to get out and see dog work. I free cast hunted for years ...

Re: Big Sky Curs, Belgrade, MT

Get ahold of him and go see him and his dogs. He may still be doing adc work. His dogs are used. Very approachable and just ask to see the dog work before you buy.

Re: Mule saddle

I've used a Colorado mule saddle that I was comfortable in, but not one mule I used It on. Had 2 Steve Edwards mule saddles that actually fit every mule I tried them on, but they were only ok for my comfort. I use a breechin just cuz of all the steep where I ride.

Been lookin for a new one, and I ...

Re: Dry Ground Dog Characteristics

Thanks for the help. I have been getting out 3-4 days a week until this week, that work thing. I know the daily hunting pays off.

I'll keep at it. I enjoy working dogs too much to not keep going. It's rewarding to watch a dog develop into something that myself or the dog didn't know it was capable ...

Re: Dennis Carson Interview

I watched this clip and a couple others you put together.

They rock!

Listening to the old guys before technology makes me feel like I have made, and this really isn't an easy sport.

Thanks for taking the time to meet and share. I look forward to future clips.

Re: Dry Ground Dog Characteristics

Thanks for the replies.

The leap frog reference really put things into perspective for me. I'm running 3 dogs. I am seeing them move out for new scent after the loss. Not sure just 3 is enough. But, they are picking it up. Faster on lion than cat. That little scent thing with bobs slows em down ...

Dry Ground Dog Characteristics

So our weather has been not so snowy the last couple years and we are hunting in drier times more. So, my questions for those that are hunting mostly dirt is,

What are the main traits you seek?

I can see where a dog that slows down on a loss can help. A good sniffer, stamina, endurance, smarts ...

Re: nonresident snow lion hunting trip

Ill get you started. Im in MT. there are wolves where ever you decide to hunt in this state, there are pockets with more in some areas. You arent going to get away from them.

The areas with most roads are going to be a draw only season. Look at and understand the regs! you can get some good ...

With the guys that are using skis instead of a solid base, how do you keep them from tipping over when you get on a slope or drift?

Re: Hunting Blown Down Timber

Blow downs are no fun. I ran a cat last week in some steep nasty that had blow down over my head the cat was using to elude us.

Just keep plugging away and the dogs will eventually get enough pressure on him he will make a mistake. They'll do better next time.

Re: Mountain Hunting Clothing

I'll add my .02 cents on this.

Merino base layers are great. I travel light and fast and it releases a lot of the heat and sweat before it builds up. For the top it's a light or mid weight with an OR wind jacket for my outer layer. It does its job and has held up.

I can tear a hole in the "top ...

Great video. Shows how much time we spend with our dogs and that we enjoy the crap out of hunting with dogs, catch or not.

Starting pups

I didn't want to high jack anyone's topic.

I want to say it is nice to see the pic of dhostetlers pup in the track.

Everyone wants a bobcat dog, yet it takes breeding, and lot of time and work to get it. Early starts, long days, and occasionally hair pulling all make it worthwhile when you hear ...
