Re: Look low for lions.

Most of you gentleman have forgot more about hounds that I will ever know! I am 6 years into this crazy sport and love the fact that my dogs teach me new stuff all the time. I live in Idaho so we are limited on running lions in Spring/Summer conditions other that the ones we pick up bear hunting ...

Re: Last Day Tom!

Here are a few more Toms from this year that I leashed the dogs up and walked away from. Most were needing a couple of years to mature.

Re: Last Day Tom!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I checked his stride in three different places and they were all 48" measurements! He is a long cat, maybe he will put some real weight on in the next year. We almost turned out on a smaller tom and female in the same canyon before I talked the crew into this track ...

Last Day Tom!

The Idaho season closed on the 31st of March. We were lucky enough to close the season just like we opened it......with a big ole' Tom. Just like the first one of the season this one was left in the tree. They don't get much larger in these parts so hopefuly the gamble to find him next year, bigger ...

Rig,
I know all about dogs that smell small tracks! Last year we treed 15 females to start the year before we put a Tom up. I guess the law of averages catchs up with everyone sooner or later. :D We probably met our Tom qouta for the year and won't see another one all year!

Here are three different Toms from last week. The first two were caught the same day! The third one is a dandy.

TylerDad,
The bay up pic was a lucky shot, but I just assume them cats find a tree! It usually ends with the dogs or the cat getting roughed up during bay-ups(usually both)

My buddy was sitting on a ridge 7.6 miles from his house and picked up his dog that his wife had just brought home with the collar still turned on! Of course that was ideal conditions, but in the steep and deep canyons your range is limited to under 2 miles.

az_,
The biggest modification we have made is to the DC20 units. They are not real durable so we have beefed them up. I did not want to use the stubby antenna and loose range so I slide a 3" piece of ridged rubber pipe over the exsisting antenna and waterproof taped it to the unit and antenna. It ...

Snow is so deep and fluffy here in SE Idaho the dogs can't stay on top. All you see is floppy ears and waggin' tail when they step off the pack trail.
Turned out on a bobcat yesterday, when the dogs finally swam their way over to the track and tried to go up a steep hill they just couldn't! They ...

All of you will eventually adopt this technology! It is by far way better that your old collars. Yes, there are some things that will need improved for hound hunting, but overall the basic premiss of these units are fantastic. I bought mine in July when they first hit stores. (Yes, I am a guinee pig ...

Idaho houndsman recieved a black eye because a terrible paper reported false/misinformed information and a FIsh and Game Commisioner opened his mouth without even seeing the cats in question.

For all of you that supported the houndsman in this post, thank you. For the person that drives that ...
