Re: Lion hound training
My advice is to work with each dog alone out in the woods. This is because of the comment you made about them running off 2 miles chasing who knows what...(personally I would suspect deer). You need to nip that in the bud, but you don't want to come down too hard on them before they are treeing targ...

Re: Kennels or large dog runs
I keep mine in a 10 acre fenced area. We have an orchard(apples mainly). They have treed bears, foxes bobcats and lions without leavening the orchard ;) Right now I have 4 dogs, 3 males (only one male is intact) and one female (Intact). They all play together like that as well... usually on days tha...

Re: The color of the dog and heat
Dark pigments in the skin is thought to help protect against damage from sunlight... I have darker colored dogs and they seem to get along fine, granted I don't have them running in deserts in the middle of the day either. But I do run mine year round and temps routinely get well into the 80s and ev...

Re: New to the sport looking to learn!
It should not make a difference to the hounds to be around the other dogs. If you have a good enough fence it should be fine. Once the hounds get old enough to trail and run and you don't have a good fence you may be spending a lot of time looking for dogs. Many can easily jump a 6 foot fence or if ...

Re: Cur lion dog
I had a black mouthed-cur that ran lion, bobcat, bear and fox well. I would say his nose ran to med... but I saw him take and tree a few right under my other dogs that I thought were colder nosed. He was very athletic and could jump a 6 ft fence from a standing start. The little bugger also climbed ...

Re: Skunk smell
Damn lions eat skunks a lot in my area.... almost every lion I have caught lately has smelled of skunk! That's my excuse for my dogs when they grab a skunk ;) I never bother with trying to get rid of the smell. Seems like you can give them a bath etc. but the smell wears off in about a week or so. W...

Re: Dragging a semi rocky road
I have never used a drag but seen the border patrol use them and they stored one near the road so I looked it over good. They took thick steel cables about 1/2 inch and 11 good sized truck tires. Drilled holes in the tires and strung the cables though. The tires were arranged in sort of a V shape wi...

Re: No interest in caged coon
He's too young to be ruined yet ;) I know people will tell you Thiers start early etc. etc. but 3 months is beyond early... Most dogs get their permanent teeth around 4 months also you don't want him exposed to any potentially disease carrying animals until fully vaccinated usually around 4 months d...

Re: No interest in caged coon
Too young to force it! You can really mess up a dog exposing him too early to something that can hurt him. At 3 months he likely does not even have his permanent teeth yet... Keep teaching him the basics, come, stay, drop it, etc. Its ok to take them into the woods as soon as they are fully immunize...

Re: Petrainer Pet916?????
Its better than nothing I guess. Sounds like you are young and can hopefully keep close to your dog. I didn't use collars until a few years back, age is starting to catch up to me. I trained my old dogs by running the basterds down if they ran off game and letting them know I was unhappy. The older ...

Re: Fox hunters
Maybe because fox are not really big game? I do run more grey fox than anything else just because that's the most numerous critter in my area. Got bored taking pictures of foxes though, I get a lot more excited seeing a bobcat or lion or even the occasional ocelot. Foxes do give my dogs some good ex...

Re: Rattlesnake Vaccine ?
Vets charge $75 and up here... I don't bother... never had a dog bitten and I train all my dogs to stay away from all snakes so there is a low chance that they will get bit.

Re: Trick to getting a dog to release?
Get you a Rottweiler,Doberman, and a Pitt and you wont have to know any of the above methods but the hikers may want to study up on them. :D No thanks! Actually my oldest dog is half Rott/Lab but he never attacked any dogs because I always kept him under control... he is almost 15 now. He did kill J...
