Re: Rigging tracks

I've been blessed with several good rig dogs over the years that would strike those old bad tracks off the box but the simple truth is not all dogs will do it .Some are naturals and some take time to learn it.The dog i have now was a late starter on the rig but will strike a ancient old track now.O...

Re: Obedience Training

Halfbreed, You & I are too old school to put up with the nonsense I see with other peoples dogs. It just aggravates me to no end when I have somebody hunting with me & it is time to go & they cannot catch their dogs. Mine must not have any prey drive either because I can call them off a ...

Re: Obedience Training

The older I get, the more obedience I like in my hounds. Heel, come & load up are the most important to me. I also want them to sit while I collar them. I can free cast them, put them on a track, but when I call them & tell them to heel, they know the hunting is over. http://i265.photobucket...

Re: The Ultimate Bobcat Dog, PART ONE...

This is JMO but I would not waste a dime on a Laika. They are not good trail dogs unless it is a very hot track. They find more game by winding then trailing. Very close hunting dogs, & will not stick on a running track for very long & really bring nothing to the table. Again JMO & I hav...

Re: Farriers or Horseshoers

Going thru some of the back posts & saw this. I have been a farrier since 1980. I have run the gauntlet as far as sharpening knives from diamond steel, files but agree that buffing wheels with rouge & the white compound are the best. I just started using the work sharpner to sharpen my knive...

Re: Pawing

Mike, we use kicking chains on horses that pound the stall kicking or riding in a trailor. I've had horses that would pound the walls so bad, they could literally kick the shoes off in a couple of hours. Once they are chain broke, no problems. Dont see why it would not work for pawing but like said ...

Re: Brown Bear Hunt in Sweden

Some of the smaller bear will tree. A friend of mine over there told me about watching a big boar bear climb a tree & knocked a couple of cubs out & killed & ate them, so yes they can tree if they want to. Yearlings & bears up to 175#, seem to have their running gear on & they do...

Re: Training off Brown Bears

I would think the easiest way to break your dogs off moose would be to put them on moose & then shock them. You could use the moose hide a head of time & that should help. Breaking your dogs off grizzly might be another thing if you want them to run black bear. From my limited experience in ...

Re: A dog breed on pure ability for thousands of years?

I have been over to Sweden three times & have hunted with several of the spitz breeds. On brown bear, they tend to use the Laika's with the West siberian Laika being favored but like among us, everybody has their preferred breed. The Laikas I hunted with would not impress a houndsman at all. The...

Re: Breaking bear dogs off coon

I would get a coon in a cage & snap the dog to the cage. start shocking the dog. do this 4 or 5 days straight & I can promise you, that dog will leave coon alone. In fact, after the 3rd day, you will have a hard time snapping the dog to the cage as it does not want to get anywhere near that ...

Brown Bear Hunt in Sweden

After a long flight over, I arrived in Stockholm to begin hunting Brown Bear with Per England & Patrik Eukland. Per was waiting for me when I arrived so we quickly headed out. We made the 3 hour journey to Per's house where I got to see two of the dogs I raised & trained. Kemmesabbe & Ya...

Carey,
that was a great story. I could almost feel the dogs breathing down that cat's neck. Great cat & certainly great dog work. Hat's off to ya'll.

Just got back last week from our hunt in Onterio. We really had a good hunt & pretty decent dog work. Got there Sat. morning, checked in, got liscenses, & headed for our cabin to drop our gear & unload dogs. Loaded a few dogs up & we took off looking for bear sign. Was not long we du...
