No I am sure there are some good Camerons out there, but I really feel they are way over rated. To have that many culls is not very good ods, its rating right up there with the Duncan Black and Tans (And I culled a bunch of them last year as well) Got most of those dogs from Utah, Wyo, Colorado.
I wouldn't mind trying one of those Jim dogs one day, but to be honest I am real happy with what I have going on right now and I really don't think I want anymore nose than I have. My dogs have to preform and catch not make a living out of trailing, if they don't I am without a job.
Keep me posted on them if you get one.

I've got Cameron and Sugar Creek breeding in my kennel, and of the different colored hounds that I've owned, they are the coldest nosed by far. You can't go wrong with either if you are looking for a cold nose. As for the Camerons (like any other line or strain), there are houndsmen breeding excellent ones that are proven and as cold nosed as they get; then, there are others breeding stock that is less proven or have less ability that, consequently, produce offspring with lesser ability.

His sire is French Creek Valley Hos; dam has a lot of coonhunting champions in her line. Mainly Northern Blue and Jet breeding. Spare Time Spanky shows up twice in her pedigree. He's a cold trailing son of a gun that stands about 27" tall, built lanky (70 pounds) and is very fast and agile on the Juniper-Pinyon canyons I hunt. He's also very, very cat-minded and is excellent in the snow or dry ground at digging up the scent of felines. I took a risk when I purchased him, since I planned on turning him into a cat dog, but I am fortunate he has worked out this well. He came out of Pennsylvania from a man who bred his female to Hos. He'll be three in March.

Oh yeh, not much heavy SC around. Hoss's father was FCV Smoke and was a 1/2 bro to my old SC bitch, Filly. They had the same sire Ed Hawley's PA Smoke. She had the coldest nose I ever saw on a Bluetick.

I like sugar creek when it comes to nose, and most can move a track pretty well too but right now I am hunting a Vaughn/smokey river female that is impressing me at two years of age in every department from nose to brains to drive to disposition. I have seen a good cold nose dog from every strain but never seen the stand out dogs work side by side to much to say, but from my experience I will say that the sugar creek probally more often then not has the nose. I would say that that alot of smokey river and vaughn dogs rank right up there as well and from my personal experience with some heavy Vaughn dogs I think they made the Cameron what they are. I would say the only blue dogs that haven't ever impressed me much is the hammer dogs alot of tree and drive not much nose.

This is the coldest nosed big game bluetick I have ever seen and possibly the coldest nosed big game dog of any breed I've ever seen (so far). Countless times I saw him start, trail and catch off of tracks that no other dogs (sometimes out of 3 or 4 other peoples dog boxes) but his 2 sons could cover with him.
Here is his background;
----------------------------GRNITECHGRCH Junkyard Blue David
-------------------GRNITECHGRCH Russ' Treein' Blue Luke
----------------------------CH Junkyard Bl. Cindy
----------GRCH Tucker's Blue Dancing Demon
----------------------------CH Tucker's Blue Sledgehammer

----------------------------Eastex Bl. Casey
----------Milroy's Bl MTN Dew II
----------------------------GRWCHNITECHCH Simon's Mid Ohio Cody
--------------------Miss Peppris Pepper
----------------------------GRCH Bluethunders Rebel Yell

Someone mentioned Les Mitchell dogs, our friends have a couple dogs out of some of his stuff crossed on Buzz Anderson's stuff and they seem to be pretty cold nosed, they could be more cold nosed but have never been encouraged alot in cold trailing by the owners. I crossed a son of Mojo on one of these dogs, this is his first season he seems like he has a decent nose so far on bear not sure how cold nosed he will end up being as I personally am convinced that half of cold trailing is learned not just genetics (although of course they do have to have the 'want to' to stick to an old track). I say this because I have seen it. Mojo (and his 2 sons that I have/had, the first son was a Sebastian/Vaughn cross he might have been colder nosed than his dad, he was killed bear hunting at a young age, the second son is out of more Hammer/Uchtman stuff and is probably about as cold nosed as Mojo was, however I have 2 siblings of his from the same cross and I do not consider them to be as cold nosed) will/would trail old cat, lion and bear tracks because I encouraged them to do so from the beginning. However I also run/ran these same dogs on coon and fox - they will/would not cold trail coon and fox - I have never asked them to. I am now trying to work on getting them to cold trail coons a little better but I will never ask them to cold trail fox, there's just too many of them. So yes I think alot of cold trailing can be learned but there are dogs with more natural ability at it than others. I also have a Cameron cross out of another Mojo son, he is pretty naturally cold nosed and I think with some more experience he will be pretty darn good with it. Unlike the others he was raised cold trailing coons (as over the last 2 years I have actually started being a more serious coon hunter) and it shows. You might ask 'why on earth would you want to cold trail a coon?' Its because I prefer to hunt coons during the day and its way easier to always get a race going if your dogs will cold trail them and I just like a dog that can cold trail...my husband hates it, to each their own I guess.

Speaking of cold trailing coons Bearman and CalBlu here on the board have some pretty cold nosed coon dogs, I'm sure they'd do the same on big game but they only coon hunt. They can fill you in on the background of those dogs if they want to post here.

If anyone has ever hunted with any of the dogs in these dogs backgrounds or any dogs out of them I'd like to hear about it. That being said I have been trying to reproduce dogs with Mojo's nose but other than Onza nobody has shown up that naturally cold yet. I am curious about experimenting with some new crosses or if I can find some of that old blood.

Right now I have a couple dogs that are pretty cold nosed. One male sugar creek/cameron and the female rambo, atkins and smokey mountain, they are both pretty equal and easily out nosed a couple of my buddys smokey river dogs. My full cameron seems like hes not quite as cold as them but hes still young and figuring it out se we'll see. With that said, I had an old dog that passed last year that had a really cold nose on him, and was a great all around dog. He was huge, 95-100 lbs in hunting shape and had the loudest bawl Ive heard yet. Too bad he wasnt around long enough to teach my young ones all he could. Here is his ped.

-------------------------------Northern blue hammer xvii
-----------------------Northern blue hammer xviii
-------------------------------Northern blue missy ann
----------------Northern blue hammer Gililland
-------------------------------Northern blue hammer viii
-----------------------Northern blue shelli
-------------------------------Northern blue irene

GILILLAND HAMMER HOSS

-------------------------------Dryfork blue spud
-----------------------Smokey river jbs chief
-------------------------------Smokey river bb's j-bell
----------------Gililland blue squaw
-------------------------------Darby's tree thumpin b.j.
-----------------------Blue fever's tree thumpin jade
-------------------------------Darby's tree thumpin bell

If anyone has any more of this ped. I would love to see it. And also if anyone still has dogs heavy from these lines I would love to hear about them and see pics if you got em. If I knew how to post pics here I would put a pic of him up if anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.

Big Mike,
Is he a really big dog? My old male would be 10 right now could they have been littermates? I tracked down Jess last year but he didnt have any dogs along those lines anymore. Did you ever get pups from your dog? Here is a pic of my old one on his last bear tree.

Yes as far as I know Buzz Anderson is still around.
How long did the Gilliland guy breed those dogs for? What kind of speed did they have compared to your other dogs? no I don't assume they're slow cause they're big, I've had some big dogs that flat proved that wrong, I'm just curious.

Not real big about 75-80lbs hunting shape. Could have been litter mates, if not littermates there were probably out of the same cross for sure the same sire. I think Jess had two bitches he was breeding. Not sure how long Jess bred those dogs.

I would say mine is just average speed. The tuffest dog and most driven dog i have ever had and the best locater. He aproaching eleven and I can still hunt him day after day horseback

Liz ODell,
Unfortunately I came across that dog later in his life but he was plenty fast I wish I had him in his prime. He was as fast as the SC/C male that I have now and the coldest nose of any of my dogs now. Getting him is what got me into hound hunting. I have no idea how long Jess Gililland has been breeding dogs. If I remember right from talking to him last year he doesnt do much anymore. I got his number, well his sons number from someone on this board I think last year I might have it but I would have to look thoroughly. Jess Gililland Sr. is the one who bred the dogs, he was very nice and helpful when I spoke with him. I sure wish I could have gotten some pups from this dog. I also really like the big dogs like that and you dont seem to see too many light colored blueticks like that anymore either. The best dogs are always free, lol.
