Uchtman bred dogs?

Could anyone tell me what the Uchtman dogs are best bred to do( coon, cat, bear) or are they just a all around dog? What kind of noses do they have or does it just depend on the dog like everything else? Are they better crossed with any certain other strain of blue dog? Any insight would be great, thanks.

Try out coondawgs.com, there is a section for certain breeds, they might be able to help you more. Although someone may chime in on here, I dont know much about them but thought I would help you out best I could.

I have one. He is a pretty nice dog. Good nose on him. more of a track to track type of dog. Big and houndy looking. I have had him on bear and bobcat and is doing pretty good. I think he will finish out as a better cat dog than a bear dog.

He is for sale if anyone is interrested.

Seen good ones, own good ones, know others with good ones. Lots of diversity in the line(like most lines). My buddy has one with lots of uchtman blood. He's pretty big, but leggy, good speed, great nose and will take a bear on by himself til you get there. I've come across enough uchtman dogs to say they are consistantly one of the best lines of rig dogs I've seen. To me that is a dog that strikes many times before you get to the strike, kind of like intuition. There are tons of Uchtman dogs out there, though. I hunt all tree game and they do a job on all. Sizes vary a lot. I've crossed them onto cameron dogs with good success.

I was going to say I thought the Utchman line was a pretty well rounded bear dog breed. Thats about all I knew about them. Listen to cobalt, he's pretty good on his blue dogs!

I have a female that is out of Uchtmans Hornet. I really like her. She is getting to be a pretty good rig dog. She has good track speed and will stick with a bear all day. I wish I had more like her.

Hey, thanks for the input guys. My son drug a little female home and I know nothing about them. All I can tell ya is at about 4 1/2 months old she was barking treed with the big dogs at her first coon tree. Hope she keeps improving. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

dtf: Old man Uchtman in south central Missouri, outside of West Plains, started up the line years and years ago. He had several - darn near many - sons, and nephews also, and of course everybody had friends, that kept the line going also. I don't know about the present status of their breeding. Originally they coon hunted them for hides and later in the UKC competition hunts. At least Doyle, one of the sons, maybe more, was active in Bluetick Breeders and Coon Hunters Assn (BBCHA). This is one line that is not bred around a single dog ("my ole Blue So and So goes back 329 times to the good old timey Blue What's His Name" - Yammer Yammer Yammer). Rather, there were lots of people in the area that grabbed pups and the Uchtman's reached out where they needed to in order to find the best hunters (the dogs) and breed them. They're good dogs.

I second what Dan said about them being good dogs, there as solid a line of Blue dogs as you will find. I had two they would run fox, bobcat & coon as good as any dogs i have had from that point and both had good noses and big mouths. I hope you like your female as much as i miss my ol dogs, is she pale, mine were both real light and lots of tiny tic's all over

No she is pretty dark blue with a real black head. She hasn't got a whole lotta tan on her head but she does have the tan ticking on her lower legs. most of the other pups he sasw were a lighter color. I hope she turns out for him as he is only 15 and is trying to build his own pack. Thanks again

Very nice looking dog. She looks very similar in her build. She has a more black head, less tan. I would post a pic if I could figure it out.

Trueblue & Cobalt what part of Idaho are the two of you from? I live in Fruitland and am always interested in talking to other houndsmen from the area.

Thanks!
