Thinking about buying a Cameron pup. I hunt coon and I hunt competitions some. Are they usually pretty quick and accurate dogs? Most of the ones I've found were used on lions an bear do they do well on coon? Any info would be appreciated.

I hunt camerons on coon but there not bred for comp. hunts way to much nose there fine if you just want to hide hunt. If you can find smokey river cross or Hammer crossed with cameron you should do just fine.

I wouldn't expect Cameron hounds to be top coon dogs, but I could be wrong. last time I showed a cameron pup a coon it looked at him a bit funny, but that was it. Maybe something different would happen if I showed him one today.

Mine do fine on coons and anything else. I got a house dog thats a pitbull that hates coons and knows how to tree, Im sure he could tree his own. Camerons do just fine on coons, not sure how they would do in a competition hunt though as I know most dont competition hunt their Camerons and they are used for big game. Worth a try to see how they do.

I've been doing pretty good on coons this year with my camerons. I cut loose on them more this year because I wanted my young dog to get more trees. I have a Smokey River cross and she finished same as camerons. Eventually, I'll make 1/2 Cameron 1/4 Smokey River pups. The Camerons have more grit and are tough on fighting game.

well i have one and cant say enough about her a bser around here has a black and tan he been to the world hunt with her i shot 3 coon out before his dog made the tree his dog was in the truck for two of them and 5 miles away for the other his dog wont start the older tracks runs by lookin for hotter tracks while my dog starts runs and trees idk dont look like comp dogs are any good but if you hunt corn field states i guess they would be great in the rivers and hard woods here you need a better dog
these guys buy grand nite champs outta ohio and they cant tree here
comps are bs any way you here the dogs start the coon a damn liar will say my dogs out frnt well on the garmin you can see whos out front and who trees first they cant use garmins in competetion so the biggest mouth and liar wins
if you want to hear a classic style hound and catch coon get one if u want something that runs pasted a track a warm track and runs for a hotter track get a comp dog .
i dont know much about comp dogs but from what i see ugghhh a bad joke just my veiw but i think ya cant go wrong with a cameron and less slick trees

Most people who own Cameron hounds(from Del) do not hunt competion coon hunts however if somone took the time there is no doubt the would do very good.

I have 2 that are 1/2 cameron. One is a three year old female, fast on track and a belly up tree dog and a 9 month old male that is running and treeing too. Big mouths and gritty.

JTG- Don't you think that outcrosses are a fundamental part of any family breeding program to ensure a certain amount of diversity to keep a bloodline healthy in both mind and body?

If anything shows up in respect to health or mind inbreeding just brought out the problems that where already there.

I do think your way off with Del but that is between him and you. I can tell you that I have many Cameron hounds from Del and they have been proven in the field or they would not be here.

That is a very interesting article and I think it has its merit in a situation where all variables are under control (like DNA analysis as they are now doing with horses). Why, if all that is true, don't we just breed brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers with their offspring and really tighten the pool and cull for exactly what remains the same in each litter? Has Del created a dog that is as close to perfect as it gets? Is his line clean of all aborations of perfect health? I'm a fan of these dogs but have seen in them more widespread issues like cryptorchidism, overbite, cherry eye, cancer, and aggressiveness which goes beyond a once in a great while occurance that I have to determine in my own head that it would take 50 years of linebreeding by your standards to clean up the mess that has been created. There are also many articles by accomplished Dr.'s Phd.'s and the like that say different. The dingo analogy doesn't work for me. That population was controlled by mother nature, not man. Same with the wolf and coyote and any other wild species populations. They are all similar in looks and actions, but in the end if they don't have enough genetic diversity (outcrossings), they will die off.
Line breeding is exactly what you say it is, a way to isolate genes and create phenotyipcal likeness, but I do believe it is a fine line. You think Del has done it with greatness and I respect that and I also have run many dogs in that line that are impressive, but I believe that infusion of unrelated similar phenotypical crosses will ultimately be for the betterment in the long run.

To answer the original question of will these Cameron dogs make top competition coon dogs, I will say no. Their genetic makeup was not created for that type of situation. I'm sure some of them would work fine and do well, but they are not suited for the pressures of comp hunting. As meat dogs they would be really good, though.

I understand that what I am saying is different than most of what everyone else may be doing but again the methods are based on science and genentics.
