I have a dear friend out in the NW that has bred Camerons for about 15 generations. The last two and fourth litters one pup from second to last and two pups from fourth to last litters had one glass eye. Total of 3 pups. Anyone else experienced this?
My question is does the GOSWICK hounds have any impact on the Cameron breeding. I know a lot of Catahoula blood was occasionally was bred into some GOSWICK hounds of South West. Does anyone else have any input as could there be any GOSWICK or Catahoula blood that has been bred into way way back in Camerons.
This is what my friend thinks and I would like to get more CHIMES from you guys.

Mike Leonard would probably be the person to ask. If he doesn't respond, send him a private message.

Re: Camerons... GOSWICK or Catahoula influence?
The Glass eye in the Cameron stock hounds is pretty easy to identify-
It comes thru the very strong foundation stock of those hounds---namely the Elbert Vaughn hounds. that is rooted in the hounds that came from the Grover Hyde hounds many years back one of those being Vaughn's Fannie.
this characteristic has been brought up many times in the writings by Guy Ormiston. and many others in the BBCHA Bluebooks.
I seriously doubt that there is any Goswick influence in the Cameron hounds. one can get a long set of registration papers on one and find the basis is almost all tracing back to Vaughn's Blue Jack influence on most of them.

From what I read in an article by Guy Ormiston, "The Thin Blue Line (Through History to the Vaughn Hound)", the "glass" or "chalk" eye is most likely a recessive trait originating from the influence of Irish hounds and ingrained in the July hound, but more prevelant in the Goodman hound. These dogs are foundational to the Galoway, which were foundation to the Jocasse Valley dogs, which were foundation to the Vaughn dogs and lastly to the Cameron dogs. Of course there are other hound breeds (like some Walker dogs) that show this same trait for the same reason.

Guy seems like a nice fellow but it’s very difficult for me to read his information without a no dose sandwich and two cups of coffee. Just because someone writes about history does not make it true.
Take some time to think about that, understanding what went on in someone breeding program and others breeding programs for several generations and then explaining it as history.
Understand genetics and you will understand where the blue eye came from but more importantly how to get rid of it forever.
It started in Elbert Vaughs yard and passed on by breeders who did not understand how to remove it from their breeding program.

the way i get rid of it is to knock the pups in the head that have a glass eye. it is a recessive trait so both parents have to have it to pass on . dont make that cross again
Re: Camerons... GOSWICK or Catahoula influence?
Only one of the parents would have to have a recessive GENE. Two people can get married one from a family of brown eyes and the other from a family of blue or green eyes.
Most often the child would have brown eyes the dominate gene.
What would you do with the rest of the litter? Breeding what is left is why the recessive gene keeps getting passed on.
What would happen if you kept a brother and sister with blue eyes and bred them?

Re: Camerons... GOSWICK or Catahoula influence?
If you breed the blue eyed parents you get only blue eyed babies. If you breed blue eyed parent which carries blue/blue genes to a blue/brown parent you get 3/4 chance at blue eyed puppies with 1/4 chance at brown eyed puppies that have blue/brown genetics. Blue/blue breed to brown/brown creates all brown eyed puppies with 1/2 of them being blue/brown genes that show the dominant brown eyes. A blue/brown breed to a blue/brown yeilds 1/4 blue eyed puppies, 1/2 blue/brown puppies that have brown eyes and 1/4 brown/brown puppies. The reason it only pops up every so often is because you only know it is there by looking at the pups when it shows up with two brown eyed parents that have blue/brown genetics. The way to end this genetically is to never breed either parent again because they will pass 1/2 chance of the blue/brown recessive trait on to puppies. It may not show up again until it crosses with a similar recessive blue/brown recessive. It could be ten or twenty generations later. By line breeding, this trait can be culled out if producing parents and pups are taken out of the program.
It would be possible to keep brown eyed pups if one took the effort to identify genes by future breeding. They would sure have to be super hot dogs for all that effort. This holds true if you are talking about a gene for one eye or both. Its just a different gene.

First you may not get any blue eye pups. If you do it will be just a few. The female will pass mitochondrial genes to her son that he will not pass on. The mitochondrial gene is where you find genetics disorders most often.
You can NEVER remove this trait from line breeding only by in-breeding and you can do it within four generations.
To understand you will need a basic knowledge of genetics. The understanding of how to lock in genes.
