Friend of mine has a couple. They both turned out to be good dogs, one being exceptionally amazing. If it wasn't for her breaking her shoulder as a puppy from falling off the front porch, she would be an all star for sure. Still an amazing cat dog, but due to the injury she is a bit slow for bear ( runs on 3.5 legs haha). It's crazy to see a dog that good, that has to overcome a huge setback like that. Piles of drive and smart as a whip.
I think that if you purchase a dog from someone who used to tree cats for a living, you have a good chance of the dogs turning out. I know what you mean on cost, my wife just killed the thought of us getting a pup from Steve once she realized the cost after the CAD to US exchange haha... But from what I've seen it would have been worth it. Just make sure that Steve hunts like you hunt yourself, I imagine that if you get a pup from someone who hunts his dogs every day, and you hunt every Saturday... You won't see the same return on your investment.
