Postby robbyson99 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:00 am

hey guys i havent been on here for awhile buying a new house and all but i wanted to share that my cameron UTAH is doing awesome in the treeing department. got some awesome pictures of him late this winter and a few recently on some coons. hes about 21 months old now and turning on nicely. it took him a while and i was real frustrated with him last season but this year is gonna be a good one for me and utah.

well we went out last weekend to run some coons. only ran for a few hours. the first strike we let our old dog off the truck and didnt let utah off the rig until he opened. he opened and i let him go. he ran into the tree with her then started screwing around a bit. he went to the opposite side of the road for a bit but found his way to the tree fairly quick. i tied him to the tree and he treed hard after t hat. he would stop every now and t hen to smell our females back side. what can i do about that? either way he continued to tree. the t ree had no branches or anything so i couldnt climb up and throw that bastard out. let him tree about a half hour to get some scent in his nose. then about an hour later our lady dog struck again and utah struck with her kinda half hearted but he did open when she did. so we let both of them go. they ran side by side opened right up for about 10 minutes and then stopped. they split and utah was about 1/4 mile in kinda running back and forth opening a few times a minute or so and nothing from our older hound. i went down in to get him and he was kinda circling but wasnt at a tree and our older hound ended up coming back to the truck. dont really know what happened. im thinking the coon treed somewhere and he just didnt find the tree i guess. dont really know!!! we called it quits after that but i was kinda happy with utah. just seems like he still doesnt like to run with another dog. but he did run with her on the second coon until they split. could have been 2 coons for all i knew and our old dog just lost it. dont know. it was a good first night out anyways.

Good lookin' dog but someone might correct me here but shakin a coon out to your dog is only going to increase your problems drastically.
Either leave it up there or shoot it out to him or he's gonna start leaving the tree to look for that coon he "expects to come flying out so he can chase/kill it again" and from what I've read, theres no cure for that problem.

Hey man, how ya doing? This is Paul that hunted with ya a couple of years ago!

My 2 cents on shaking coon out is that if a dog isn't intelligent to know if the coon is still in the tree, then the dog won't make it anyhow! Seen dogs trained this way for years Dogs must have brains to be "great"!!!!

Paul
Keep looking up, beyond the trees!

Hey Paul how ya been. How's that walker of yours doing. My bluetick is coming along but its been a long road. Treeing well but I'm having a hard time getting him to follow a track. You in the area or what. Haven't heard from you in awhile

Its an old thread and I have a ton of pictures but don't know if I can load them from my phone. Utah has come a long way. He's 3 now and doing much much better. His nose is as cold as I've ever seen and he's treeing very well. Ran some bears with him this year. He's as strong as an ox. Hopefully I can get new pictures on here soon. Our cat season is now in full swing
