breaking trash

Postby shoot4fur » Thu Apr 29, 2010 2:35 am

I had my little female walker out tonight, she is now around 3 months old. We got into some deer, and where they had been bedded. She whent crazy with all the scent. I told her no deer and wacked her when needed. I do not have a shock collar, so i am up for ideas, or will what i did tonight break her on it? She seems to correct easy the way i did it tonight. Other than that she smoked the long drag i did for her, and pulled tree. She is looking good cant wait for next season. I think it is time to get her on some coons with the older dogs as soon as i can, what do you guys think. Thanks

To each their own but 3 months old is a baby. I wouldnt be correcting her on anything right now. Everything should be positive. Teach her to handle, teach her to come to the tone, teach her to load etc it all pays off in 6-8 months from now when they're hyper as hell.
If anything, dont introduce her to any more deer, you've got all the time in the world to do that later. Some will disagree.
Just be her buddy for now and let her harass the house cat for another month or two, then show her a caged coon if thats what you wish to run before letting her trail one (I only do this once just to see that she will fire on a coon, being a new scent and I dont show them another cage unless they have problems treeing and even then I show them as few as possible)
Just about any coon can whip any 5 month old dogs ass so be cautious.

You'll get a dozen variations of "what to do" replys so just decide whats right for THAT pup and have fun.
I'd evaluate her (is she bold or timid, get over things quickly or sulk) and keep that in mind when working with her. If you lose her trust you may not get it back.

I agree with BlacktailStalker. I have a habit of trying to correct pups to early. Then they get timid. I hate timid dogs. I wouldn't break her off trash untill she is running whatever you plan to hunt. Then work up to it. Every time I correct a dog I spend the rest of the day hunting as hard as I can to put them on what they are suppose to run. You want to break her from trash not from hunting all together. Good Luck

Just like the other guys said let it be a pup and it sure dont hurt to do the light corection like you were doing but at that age no electric collar that is out of the Question at that age she needs to learn to trail anything and then make afew trees before correcting with shock collar. later, Andy
