Best Redbone Breed For Cats

Postby George Streepy » Thu Apr 29, 2010 1:29 am

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good redbone line for hunting bobcat and lion in the Pacific Northwest. I have two that have become to old. I hunt walkers because they are popular around here. I am always looking for something different to hunt. Right now I have four walkers that are my main dogs. I have tried some redbones over the years but none turned out. I can say I have never had to cull a redbone. Even the ones that don't hunt have become excellent pets for someone.

I have raised a couple from 8 weeks old. The were the easiest pups I have ever worked with. Tons of drive, very aggresive, ready to go right of the package. Just had to show them what to run and what not to. My male is cold nosed, used to be a pretty fast track dog, locates and trees good. He is not the best at anything but good at everything. The drawback is his feet. Horrible feet. Has been layed up half his life with blown pads.

Any suggestions on good redbones?

Thanks,
George

I have wonderd the same thing. When I was a kid back in the 70s and 80s we had some redbone cat dogs. But made the mistake of letting them die off with out ever raising any pups.Vern Pool and Francis Baker used to raise some good redbone cat dogs in Oregon . I am pretty sure both of them passed on years ago.I doubt any of that blood line is still around. If it were I would sure like to know. Good luck. Larry

I sure have enjoyed mine. Mine came from Canada. Don't for sure know the full blood line. Their 10 years old now. Tried one out of the same parents a couple years ago and she didn't turn out. But the ones I still have showed more promise at an early age than any other pups I have ever had. They were so easy to work with. I forgot about my redtick in the last post. She is a nice dog. I guess I just like a mixed up pack of dogs. I think the best redbone I have ever hunted with is my Rusty dog. But thats only because I don't know anyone else that hunts them. I watched Rusty at ten years old carry these other dogs on a lion track last winter. Showed them how to pick up looses on some bobcat races too. So I know there has to be good red dogs out there somewhere.

I catch cats with Tom Solbergs line of redbones. Can't say if they are better than another redbone breeder, but they work for me.

My buddy and I run dogs that are heavy T-top bred and they do good for us. I run my dogs on lion, bobcat, and coon and catch game consistently. Good luck.

I have hunted redbones for a long time and really like them. They can be one of the best looking hounds when put together right too. I mean liver red in color (not washed out), houndy head, and good bawl mouth. What I like most about the ones I hunted is how well they treed and I never hunted with one that trashed. They were just good solid cat dogs. But to find a good line of redbones has been a real challenge. I am sure interested in hearing about any line of redbone that comes highly recommended especially if they are cat oriented.

The pedigree for the litter I have on the ground now is posted on another thread I posted in the redbone section. Take a look there. Thanks - Kevin

You might want to check out Lionslayer's pup, he might have a couple left, not sure. Check out his post under the Lion Hunting Forum. He hunts cat with Redbones and seems to do quite well. I am buying a pup from him. He is in Montana, so not sure if that is PNW enough for you. Maybe check out the Olympic Tree Hound Assoc and see if they know of anyone too. Good luck

I have a female redbone from the Hoffmeisters bloodline that will hunt any cat, coon, bear. She has been the best dog. She listens to your commands! I just had a litter from her which is her last litter. I have 11 of these pups, that will be avail in April, they can be shipped. I am going to keep one of her females and have her fixed. Let me know if you know someone who might be interested in a pup, I would even be interested in trading a pup or two.
