black headed walkers

Postby mountain top » Sun Nov 15, 2009 11:15 pm

ok I know this is gonna sound stupid, I'm NOT new to hounds or tree dogs but I would like to here your opinions. I bear hunt with some ole boys in south west VA, most of them hunt walkers and most of the hounds are black headed blanket back dogs, alot of the dogs come from the same line but alot of them aren't related. these guys dont hold much stock in papers for a dog and most aren't color blind but seems like most of the best hounds these men have are black headed walkers. I don't want to get into a pissn contest over colors of hounds and registered and grade dogs, just want to here your take on the matter.

I don't think it has anything to do with the color of the head. My Best walker has a Black head but I have some very good ones that have red heads also.
I think it is like the old saying goes that a good dog will always have a black roof in his mouth. I think some old timer had a good dog and tried to sum it up in a easy way like color.
I have culled alot of black headed walkers. Just that same as the Red headed one.

i could think of a lot areas to pick a dog apart w/out worrying about what the color of his hair is, as long as he has plenty of it.

the line of walkers i raise the blackheaded ones are always the least gritty fortunately only 1 or 2 born every litter. i linebreed so you would be surprised how you can see the same dog almost again and again the first 5, 6 litters i thought just a coincidence. not anymore

i have both and each have some great qualities but that gritt thing is just BS... my grittiest dog is a blackheaded walker bitch. There are far too many factors to include before color... A great houndsmen once told me that more often than not the houndsmen fails the hound. Too many guys these days are looking at color and line bred dogs, when they should be looking at the dam and sire of the pups and how they are started/ worked with. JMO

I had a blackheaded walker that was very gritty , he'd grab a coon and you'd get a blood bath . Tried to take on a train one night ,NOT GOOD !
