Re: New Litter
Devin,
Hey just some questions about the dogs that you have bred so far. I know that you use your dogs to run all game whether it be lion, bobcat, bear. Have you found that some crosses produce different traits that make them a better lion or bobcat dog apposed to another cross that seemed to really excell on bear but were still good on lions and bobs. I know that alot of the old time breeders made different crosses for different reasons and many times it was because that particular cross made good dogs no matter what you ran them on but also that they really excelled at on one or the other. I have talked to a few houndsman and gotten a pup or two from them in the past and many times they ask me what I prefer to hunt and how I plan on hunting the dog. Usually they say something like, "well they all make fair dogs but there is one cross that I like a little better for bear and there is this other cross that I have been making that do real well on bobcats or lions etc....Yet its the same line of dogs. I hope this all made sense.

Re: New Litter
Reagan, Great question and I will be honest on this cross I don't know
This is a first time cross The Female will really grub a old track and is a very nice cat dog and a pretty dang good bear dog but I like her better as a cat dog. The Male has been run on bear more than anything and he likes to run hard and fast and it is harder to get him to slow down. I am glad she only had 3 pups, I am keeping all of them to see how they turn out.
Both Duece and Star have had a litter each from different crosses and both litters are doing very good, but still young. Time will tell how they turn out and what they prefer.
I would like to breed for pups that excell on all the biggame or I don't want to breed them again. I don't want to just breed for a litter of lion pups or bear pups but I dont' want to breed for a lesser dog just because I want them to run both cats and bear.
I have no problem shooting every dog I own and getting something better but I want to see it first and see it consitantly being duplicated. And that is the biggest problem I have seen with the biggame bred dogs, It was a lucky cross and they can never duplicate it.
I have spent alot of money collecting my Buster dog and it is not just because of his bloodlines it is because he is reproducing pups that I like better than him. And I feel the bloodlines were just the blueprints on acheiving that. I don't believe in just breeding the best to the best, I want to breed my best to my best and use the bloodlines to reproduce that same thing or better it.
Breeding the best to the best or breeding bloodlines to bloodlines sometimes works but combine the two and I think you just doubled your chances of acheiving just that.
Alot of guys on here will disagree with me but that is ok they can hunt and breed what they want and I will do the same.
Anyway I will keep you posted on their progress and what they prefer my luck it will be porky pines or skunks

Re: New Litter
Heck Reagan, You can Hijack my post anytime
I will say along these lines that I have, I am trying to stay away from the Clover dogs And I really dont like the Tony's Wild clover stuff. Hotter Nosed, alot of slick trees and hard headed(anyway the ones I have had). That being said it is harder and harder to get dogs off of ole Bozo himself and many guys are getting their line of Bozo thru the clover dogs. I have the closest Bozo line anywhere, and am trying to keep it up as close as I can without bringing in the clover dogs. I want a dog that is easy to handle and has a nose,Brains, speed, and tough as nails.
You get a chance come go for a hunt this winter
We will send the wives and kids to Steam Boat to go shopping and we will hunt.

Re: New Litter
That is what I was looking for in part, I guess. I wanted your take on what you have seen with the dogs you have bred thus far and the good's and bad's of the crosses you have made. Have you tried any crosses on some of the older Hickory Nut Harry dogs?
That sounds really good. I would like to run over there. How long did it take you to get from Craig to Herriman? I may have to slip on over there one of these weekends.

Re: New Litter
I have a female that is heavy(top and bottom) (old) Hickory Nut Harry, she has no Bozo. I have not bred her yet, I have had her for a year now and I wanted to see how she hunted first and see what kind of dog she is. The biggest thing I don't like about her is she is not very fast, more of a track for track type of dog. She has been a pretty nice dog but her speed holds her back on bear. Real nice lion dog and a nice bobcat dog if you put her with a younger dog so that once it is jumped the younger dog can put some hurt on it. And like the Bozo dogs she is a Tree dog. Which I feel is important in a biggame dog. I feel to many animals keep jumping and are lost because of dogs being too loose at the tree.
This will be a female(Abby) I will breed next spring. I will loose her for most of the bear season but I lost 2 of my best bear females (Star and Penny) this year becase I bred them and Star will not be bred for a couple of years now.
In two years I will be indrucucing 4 upcoming males into my breeding program that I have and are line bred Bozo and if he keeps going like he is, the end of 2010 Lightning Ridge Hardwood Bozo will be used in my breeding program.
Come out any time. Durring the bobcat season I set up a camp and stay most of the season at "Bobcat Camp"
It takes 5 hours to get here from Herriman.

Re: New Litter
Dang Devin them old slow track dogs are the kind I like, at least one or two of them to help sort things out
Stan Mecham told me one day that one of the coldest nosed lion dogs he had came out of old Hickory Nut Harry. He said he was a real nice all around lion dog. He said he could trail a lion track right down a hard packed dirt road. The other papered dogs that he spoke highly of were the Gold Creek Mundo dogs.
Five hours isnt bad Devin. You can pretty much count me in on a lion/bobcat hunt or two. I'll keep in touch.
