new to curs
Ok im 14 and getting my first dog my mom said I have to get a blackmoutcur and I want it to hunt coon os this a good choice and if not what is for a first dog I also would like to know if I should get it started or as a pup
Re: new to curs
I got my first dog as a pup it was female mt cur.The guy I got her from ran hounds for alot of years. He borrowed her 5 years later to train a young dog he had . He said she was the best dog he had ever hunted with .What I did back then was read hound trainig book and just put lots of time into all the training. My dogs now dont get near as much time due to work and family . My dogs still hunt pretty decent but they sure could use that extra time I dont have anymore.I still run curs.If you dont have the time to put into trainig you could get a started dog but nothing will ever be as rewarding as a dog you trained yourself.the hardest part is not all dogs make good hunting dogs no matter what breed you get but lots of time and training give the dog the best chance

Im going to have to say if you want a good, smart, easy to train dog to hunt coon or any other game, big or small, get a well bred mountain cur. I can hook up up with the best. And I won't be making a dime. I just like to see kids get started with good dogs.
Re: new to curs
Hamilton10 what line of mt curs do you run that is pretty cool offering help to get a young hunter started. that is sort of how I got started 26 years ago and i'm still addicted.

Re: new to curs
Most of what I have are kemmer stock. Some are OMCBA - Kemmer crosses. All of them have Gold Nugget, Blondie and Yellow Jack blood. Nearly all are natural born tree dogs. Most are semi-open on track. I hunt coon, hogs and bear with them.
Re: new to curs
if mom won't budge on the BMC (and there are alot more treedogs bred in Mt curs), then get a ladner much more treedog bred in there.
Re: new to curs
thanks for all the help
Re: new to curs
Sounds like tou have dogs with the same blood lines as one of my kemmer dogs the sire of my dogs was pretty good on lions and bobcats he could run every day.The one I have has sort of arough gait he is apretty good dog but he gets pretty worn out on long races.he has caught around 65 lions and a few bobcats.Ihave thought about selling him and starting another young dog.

Re: new to curs
Cat hunter do you just hunt lion on snow? I have only hunted them on dry ground.
Re: new to curs
I hunt mostly in snow but I hunt some on bare ground but the hardest hunting I have seen for my dogs was running game on bare ground that is frozen hard as a rock.I don't know how my dogs would do on dry ground.Iwold really like to try it sometime.
