Do cures run bears the same as hounds cold trailing and opening on track and how would you start curs? the same as hounds?

If you use a line that is know for cold trailing and opening on track. I have a Striker bred Mt. Cur that will Cold trail And opens good on track. I run Bear,cat & fox with my curs and cur crosses. I start all mine the same with trainer. Started turning her in bear hunting at about 7 months old has not missed a tree

I think Jeff pretty well nailed it. I train them just like a hound. I let them run around and grow up, get them out to learn to wander around and use their nose as young pups. When they are ready the get an up close look at a coon to get them fired up over an animal and really smell it good. After that they get to run short races(at least I do my best to make them short). and keep working your way up from there. A well bred cur dog will do everything a well bred hound will do, for the most part. They have a different style to them, but I like haveing that around.

Thanks,im have to start mine without any trainers and i never started pups without one so starting from scratch.Is there a way to start them to strike from the box?

You will be disappointed in their nose if you are accustomed to using hounds. You will love them on a bay.

You won't find to many cur dogs that cut loose with a big ol bawl. They are very gamey and aren't afraid to get a mouth full of fur. They are agile which is nice on a bayed bear. With the right breeding behind cur dogs I wouldn't say they are better or worse than hounds, they just have their own style. I enjoy haveing a cur dog or two in the pack. Just be ready to take some guff from a few people.

Don’t discount the cold trailing ability of a big game breed Mt. cur! The striker bred curs are some fine dogs if one spends some time with them from a pup socializing and putting them on game, they will work to please you and you will be pleased. Just like hounds some will not make the grade but to assume they won’t take an old track and not only work it but, push it is only showing ignorance. The Kemmer stock Mt. cur is a very versatile dog and a fine dog given the chance. Put in the right hands they will prove themselves and rise to the top among any breed of hound out there you just have to be open minded enough to give them a try.

I was just woundering where you guys are getting your striker bred dogs from?

Rossco, I don’t have any curs at this time but have hunted with several over the years, if I were to get one today for hunting big game it would most surely come from the Fry’s they still maintain the big game bred kemmer’s with Fry’s Striker being in their pedigree a ton and many other’s that Derrel Fry incorporated into his breeding program, bare ground or snow they can put game in the tree they the Fry’s are a hunting family and strive to produce good dog’s.

I have a Stryker pup who just made his first coon tree. about 5 months old. He has is super active hunter and is always trying to wind something.
