NEW TO CURS

Postby wwridgerunner » Wed Apr 13, 2011 8:05 am

Well i seem to have found a few curs used for big game, and coon,i found a pup in ny and another in tenn. 1 kemmer and 1 original mtn cur,the man in last months full cry had a litter and am waiting for my turn to pick, should be ready in may,its been a long road and its hard to run curs after you ran hounds for so many years. It can get aggrivateing if you get one that hunts to close, those are the squirrel dogs. The other parts are the dog not staying on a long race,if you get a dog that dosent get a easy bear that trees quick he wont stay in the race he just turns around and comes back those are squirrel dogs, but there are some plus's to haveing big game curs and [there is a difference between big game curs and squirrel curs] some are silent on track so when they jump a bear he just shits and up he goes. surprise!!! lol lol and i dont have to find them i just whistle and in they come and away we go.What i had to learn was i went hunting with them,i didnt just turn them out and they would go.If theres no bear or coon in the area of say 300 yds they just come back and you move or you walk,so ive walked and drove ,so the change in hunting style was something i had to get adjusted to, these are just some of the things ive noticed in a short time and am sure theres much more to learn from these dogs,i am still hanging in but i dont know for how long lol its been tough,i just dont have the numbers of game and the dogs need to get deep and run a track so i guess the area where you hunt also dictates what kind of dogs you run. Thanks for reading my rant sorry its so long,JMO Wayne

I understand where your coming from Wayne. One thing to keep in mind and this is just one guys opinion. Curs are not hounds and IMHO should not be handled like a hound. An example that has similarities I like to think works is mules and horses. Lots of horse folks have no clue on how to properly handle a mule. You can get pretty forceful with a horse and get away with it where as it will not work with a mule and you can do some damage to their personailities. I believe curs and hounds are the same way. Most of the shy curs I've run into were made that way by guys handling their dogs the same way they handle a hound. Hounds can take rough handling and being extra forceful. Curs, IMHO are quite a bit smarter then your average hound and should be handled differently than a hound. You should give some of the UKC Leopard Hounds a try, since alot of them anymore have quite a bit of hound blood running through their veins. It might just be the right mix of dog your looking for. They are some game catching dogs that can be handled they way you may be accustomed to. Good luck in the future with whatever type of dog you follow.

I agree totally with Jeff, if you are looking to hunt big game with curs ( in this case mtn or kemmer curs) you need to get em from someone that is using them and they work consistently for them. Both kemmers and leopards are great breeds and have some great big game dogs, I know because I have both and they get it done on big game out here for me. .02

sounds like you need to find the right strain. took my kemmer out with my omc's after a monsoon last night and my kemmer went looking so hard she turned her feet to hamburger. just got to find the right ones. they are out there. everything i own has kemmers gold nugget in them.
