I picked a dog up at a shelter a few days ago that I believe is a Black Mouth Cur. Got all the traits, of a Southern BMC, except he's oversized. Roof of his mouth is black, got big webbed feet, really wide chest and head. Extremely strong, could probably pull a garden plow. Coat is short, grizzled tawny red.

What impresses me the most is his temperament. Smart, really easy to train, eager to please. Laid back and friendly to other dogs and people when introduced, really gentle around kids and people in general, but very protective, pretty much fearless. Haven't hunted him at all yet, or tried to train him for any hunting, but he has a really strong prey drive. Should respond really well to decent training.

I've owned and trained dogs for a very long time, and this is maybe the most impressive dog I've had. It would be really interesting to try to find out what line he came from. I don't see traits of any other large breeds that would account for his size. He'll probably weigh about 110 when I get the shelter fat run off of him.

Does anyone know of a breeder who breeds oversized red BMC's that come anywhere close to this description? I'd appreciate any info.

Yep, temperment sounds like a BMC.

They can get big, depends on the line. Lines that have Weatherford's in them are on the larger side. General breed standard says anywhere from 45-95 lbs. or so. Mine is about 75-80 lbs. wide chest, strong legs...looks like a real athlete. He's got Weatherford's Ben in him.

Don't know much about the Red variety. According to what I've read on the internet, they are from Alabama.

Thanks for the info. The Ben line do appear to have wide chests.

I attached a picture, if it will help. Doesn't show all the fat, but you can see his profile and chest. Hair's short, about 1 inch on the body, 2 inch ruff.

The more time I spend with this dog, the more I like him. He's 4 years old or so, starved and abused for the first couple of years, spent 2 years in a shelter with a pack of 50 dogs running loose. I thought it would be a job trying to train him and undo the damage, but so far it's been pretty easy. He's just starting to settle in and feel at home, I think. Gonna be interesting to see what all he's got.

So these Southern dogs are mostly cow and hog dogs? This guy doesn't bark until he's ready to bite something. Really quiet otherwise.

Any further leads would be appreciated. I'm just starting to learn about the breed, but they seem to fit my "list" of what I want in a dog.

kansas i'm a cur dog man love em but honestly what you have is a rescue dog that their ain't no tellin what he is . could be this could be that . good luck with him i've picked up a couple big stout cur dog lookin animals from the pound that made excellant hog dogs .
