Catahoula Treedogs

Just thought I'd share a few pictures of my pair of registered Catahoulas. I run them with the hounds on coon and big game and they do an excellent job. I wouldn't say they will ever be put in the same treeing category like a hound, but they do tree, and they can catch a pile of game. They can run a track as good as anything, tough, the male even head down trails a bit, and has a lot of range. Smart, easy handling dogs. I wouldn't call them any smarter than my hounds, and they can be hard headed and can hold a grudge. No grittier than a hound, they were bred to be baydogs, not catch dogs, and they do it well. Both are just 2 years old. Overall they have done a lot better than a lot of breeds and lines of hounds I've gone thru in a while, so long as you don't expect them to be just like a hound. But they play hound games pretty well. Fixing to head to East Texas in a few weeks and enter them in the National Hog Baying Championship.

Planning one breeding these two in the Spring, if anyone would be interested in trying them for big game. I can't guarantee that they will all come out as cold trailing treedogs, but I definitely like them enough to give it a try and see if I can get a few more.

Cassandra, I live about 5 miles south of the catahoula regesteration headquarters. I don't know how many that are in a 50 mile radius of this area. I would saw a large number, most all addresses have one are two in the yard. All I know work cattle or hogs, never seen anyone seriously use hem for game hunting unless they are some kind of a hound cross.

Good looking dogs.
I have never seen or heard “catahoula” and “treedog” used together like that. Is that a new breed? I know some people from Texas who call leopard curs “catahoulas”. I know some leopard people that would get upset about that. Just wondering what you have there, the same as the catahoula cow dogs? Where are they from? A hunter, cattle man?

Any way good to hear from you, and glad you are having some fun.

I had a pair of Cats years ago that i coon hunted they could do anything a hound could do and just as good a tree dogs as any hound. They was a little hard headed and did not like strangers at all when hunting. Also no one could go to tree first but me once i was at tree both dogs was fine and never bother a soul. I never had them even growl at another dog. Both dogs were open on track the male more so than the female and both had plenty of grit. Enjoyed the pics and stories it broight back some good memories. Dont under estimate them Cats and you woll have a pile of fun with them.

These are purebred NALC registered Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dogs. No Leopard Cur/hound. I'd have never thought they would do as well on bears and coons as they do. These two were 100% natural treedogs. I have lots of video of them. They don't tree as hard as say a purebred coonhound, but they tree as good as any cur or running dog cross I've met. I bought my female as a pet/show/truck dog, and by about 9 months old she would not stay at the truck and was gone with the hounds. So I bought my male and he's even nicer. Has a better nose, open on track and locates well. I cannot guarantee that all these pups would come out as solid treedogs. But I'm gonna breed them and see if I can't keep a couple more. The male comes from hog/cow stock. My bitch comes off hog/baypen stock.

Here is a picture of the dogs coming out from a tree. Long race and it jumped tree a few times. Both of them have zero dog aggression. This is my male. He gets along with my other intact males and small puppies. I've heard a lot about curs being dog aggressive or overly gritty. Not the case with my two. I think if raised with hounds, they think they are hounds.
