January's weight hunt winner

Postby Sportdog » Sat Mar 14, 2009 2:23 am

The guy who won the eastern Oregon bobcat weight hunt for the month of January weighed in a 38.5 lb cat. This wouldn't bug me if the same guy wouldn't of entered a picture of a 38.5 lb bobcat in the previous newsletter, which was caught the second week of December by his friend without him even being there. To make things worse I asked the guy who actually caught the big cat where it was and he told me it was in this fella's posession. Another guy who lives in the same town as the cheater told me the guy called him up and told him he wanted him to enter the hunt with him and weigh in the big frozen cat for the month of January. As long as people are pulling this cheating stuff the OUSDA is going to have trouble getting people to enter the cat hunt. I was entered this year and did it right but now I have no interest in ever entering again.

Sportdog, I talked to Wes about this at the Redmond sport show. I agree with what you said. If you know details about this please call me. If he did cheat i'll make sure that he's banned from the hunt from here on out! I to find it hard to believe that there were two 38.5 pound cats killed. we will not put up with cheating from anyone! start getting proof and i'll bring this up at convention.

I have got to the bottem of the rumors that are being said. It was admitted to me that the 38 pound cat was killed in dec. and enterd in jan. by the TWO gentelmen that caught and killed the cat. however the rule was never stated in the newsletter that the cat had to be killed the month it was enterd for, this is nobodys fault but my own. The wieghts for the months will stand as is and next year it will be advertised that the cat or coon has to be killed the month it's wieghed in. I am sorry to Steve Phipps for any greaf that has been caused to him over this misunderstanding. Steve, to me seems to be an honest and upstanding guy and until he himself prooves otherwise I will continue to think of him as such.

This is a picture of Steve holding his 38+ lb. bobcat, and one of his hounds that treed it. This is the cat that was entered in the January weight hunt. The OUSDA weight hunt rules were followed in the taking of this cat. For whatever reason, there was some misinformation about Steve not being at the tree when this cat was harvested. I personally spoke with both gentleman that were at the tree shortly after this cat was taken (via cell phone). It's understandable why folks felt they had a grievance with the false information that was out there. These weight hunts support a good cause, the OUSDA, and should be meant for enjoyment and friendly competition among fellow houndsman. Steve is a long-time supporter and contributor of the OUSDA, and thought it would be fun to enter this cat in the January weight hunt. He was highly disappointed that these rumors came about, but are glad they have been dispelled.

The truth needed to be told, especially when a man who has done so much for the sport is accused of false allegations, because someone either told some fallacies or misrepresented the full truth.
