Now, I know there are many, many other attributes that you must take into account when it comes to breeding or starting a line or bloodline of dogs, but, seems to me this would be the starting point. Then later after the first or second initial breeding, you could begin to line breed and breed outside dogs into your line to start to develop the other attributes that you desire to see in you bloodline?

starting a new bloodline
I posted a question on the cat hound section of this forum, but thought it was probably a good idea to post here as well. If I were to take a regular hot to medium nosed coon hound, regardless of breed and type of hound and were to breed it to a cold nosed bloodhound, wouldn't that be a good starting place to try to develop my own breed or line or bloodline of cat dog's?

bloodhound
So, say, after the first breeding and litter, crossed with a male bluetick coonhound and a female bloodhoound. If I were to take a pup from that first litter, and breed it back to the female bloodhound (the mother) would the next litter be twice as cold nosed or would that litter be just as cold nosed as the first?

rite
im with mike breed has nothing to do with cold nose it is all about blood lines not breeds espically were 99% of blood hounds are show bred pieces of shit. i am wanting to learn about majestics but you guys are way off. and why start with a hot nosed hound when so many quality cold noses are around. even then a cold nose comes from experiance as well as breeding. a bloodline should start with the best of the best not improve on medium, and always remember even two top dogs dont always make top grade puppies. alot of work comes into making good strains and line breeding is key....

just look for majestics that already meet your specs, no sense trying to reinvent the wheel.

The ingredients of this soups have been mixed, stirred, boiled, eaten spit out and recreated over and over again. If it was thaty easy to pick a dog by type or even working qualities and then make the crosses and the adjustments accordingly we would all be hunting the cat's meow, if you will.
I am sorry but the cross of the bloodhound that came into our tree breeds a hundred years ago was a whole lot better than you are going to find by pimping and bribing the inmate keeper at Huntsville State Penitentiory. It ain't happening folks. You will hit on a bit now and then but truely better hounds come thru careful sceintific breeding , hard hunting and culling ruthlessly,. the stock our forfathers already sacrificed blood sweat and tears over. It is pretty hard to re-invent the tire when you are parked next to the Goodyear plant.
Now then I will admit you can do a little bit of work and create a dogs that looks pretty much like the ones that Dale Lee and even Ben Lilly had in the pictures. BUT THAT DON'T PUT NO CAT HIDES ON THE WALL.

i agree
very well put mike it is hard to improve when perfection has been created it is much less difficult to reap off the work and irony of those before us than to copy there results. good dogs are here it is up to us to keep them going not re create them
