South Lake Tahoe

Could a few people tell me how the conditions have been near South Lake Tahoe for hound hunters. I wondering what what the availability of public land is to run dogs. I have hunted Kern and Tulare Countys which are good. I have read that the public/private land boundaries are very confusing, is this true?

I have also read that much of El Dorado National Forest is closed during the winter and spring which I think would hurt for the cat & fox training.

I am considering a career move which will put me in this area. Any input would be appreciated.

Hunting in the Tahoe Basin itself is dicey. Bears do one of four things: they tree right away or they fight the dogs on the ground or they run straight into town or straight into the Desolation Wilderness. But they have big bears, 400+ lbs. SLT is in El Dorado County and there is plenty of good hunting on the west slope of the Sierra's. Another issue in Tahoe are the locals. Half of them hate bears and the other half hate bear hunters. There are odd seasonal exclusions too. Mainly deer zone X7b which doesn't open to bear on the regular opener. It is delayed a few weeks because X7b is a draw zone and has big mulies. Hope the info helps. Look me up when you make the move. -Pete Meyer

Pete we'll have to meet up and hunt the area this next season. We usually hunt up north but going to bring some of our hounds down, to my house and hunt the elderado county area. My two black and tan pups are showing good potential especially my female.

Sounds like a plan. Do you have any breeding plans for your bitch? My strike dog Trapper is a black and tan. As a matter of fact black and tans are all I run. He comes from Sooner lines and is fast as hell. I am headind to Iowa in May and I am trying to set something up with a breeder my buddy has dealt with before. I need an unspayed bitch. All my bitches are spayed including my girlfriend, hahaha. I am also going to put in for a Nevada non-resident bear tag. I heard, may or may not be true, that someone took one around 700 lbs. by Incline Village. Probably bs but Tahoe has big bears. Already counting the days to season. -Pete
