Length of race?

Postby kbe119 » Fri May 24, 2013 3:22 pm

Hey just curious what you guys figure is the average length of your bear races. If you don't mind specifying the terrain you hunt. Thanks

i hunt mountains of northern maine to the swamps of downeast maine. what i love about bear hunting is that every drop is different.the average is under constant change .bears do so many different things that change the outcome of length and time . scenting conditions . when was the bear at the bait ?how far did he travel from the bait ? are the hounds in shape?etc etc etc........if i gave you an answer which i dont have it would mean nothing .now i had a black n tan coonhound who was hotnosed when i was younger who if struck from the rig would go about 100 yards and tree for an average . different ballgame alltogether.

I hunt the mountains in the west. For treed bears my shortest race was 100 yards and my longest one was 17.5 miles that was GPS collar miles. before GPS I got to a tree 50 hours after I turned loose. Every bear race is different and there really aren't any averages.

Northern Wisconsin forest.....According to my GPS a bear decided to tree after about 11 miles of decent pressure on the bear (.5 to 1 mile, at most, being cold track) . Dunno what it was about that bench mark but if the bear didn't tree right away (couple hundred yards), it seemed to go that far before climbing.

This was from morning hunts in decent heat/weather. Night hunts and a fresh track generally seem to be much shorter runs.

I hunt in the mountains of VA and all of our races vary too. Treed a little guy, about 75 pounds, back in December that went 10 feet from his bed to the tree. Was free casting a couple dogs and they went straight to treeing. Thought the bumped a coon walked over the side to see the bear sitting up in the tree. Have had some run 15 miles by gps that just wont tree even putting fresh dogs right behind them.
