Wolf Kill 8/17/13

Postby carl » Tue Aug 20, 2013 1:08 am

I dont post on here often but u figured id just tell you guys running bear to be careful. Last saturday night we threw four hounds on a maybe hour old track on a bait on the main road we hunt. Dogs took off good and i sounded really good for an hour and a half. Dogs were headed for the north road but a vehicle passing by turned the dogs and they headed south towards a decent size swamp. Now you guys have to understand we've been hunting around these wolves for years now but we always look for sign talk to other people about whar they have been seeing in the area and check the dnr website for where the packs are. We would never throw dogs into wolf infested areas. Back to the story, ended up catching the two younger dogs crossing a trail and the two older ones got across. My old dog around 13 and a 3 year old. They were still barking good for a half hour then both shut up. About 10 minutes after they shut up i heard the strangest bark ive ever heard from a dog for about 15 seconds then silence. Somehow my old dog got out alive but the 3 year old wasnt as lucky. We got in there within a half hour but of course we were to late. This is getting really old and is the worst thing ive ever seen hunting. The picture was taken at the kill spot saturday night and when the usda got in there sunday there was a handful of guts left. They ate the rest of him. Something more needs to be done........

Sorry for your loss. 5 to 6 years ago I lost a dog to wolves and have had 2 close calls since then but managed to get to my dogs before anything happened. I am always interested in knowing how dogs act when they encounter wolves. Was the reason you caught the back 2 dogs, that you knew you had wolf issues? Was your 13 year old chewed up? Was the 3 year old leading the race and got nailed first then the 13 year old quit the race and came back?

dhostetler, the reason we caught the two was because they are younger dogs just over a year and were a ways behind. They also happened to stop by a guys truck so he just grabbed them. No my 13 year old was not chewed up but he still is acting weird. As far as I could tell my 13 year old was leading the chase so im thinking they may have smelled him and ending up picking off the dog killed which was behind. Somehow he came back threw were they killed the 3 year old back to us and wasn't touched. We were far enough in the woods that we didn't have time to take him back to the truck and ended up walking him into the kill. Im not sure if the kill site is why he has been acting weird from seeing the dog and smelling death wolves etc. or he knew about it for sure when the dog was killed and he was still loose. And no we had no idea we had wolves there until we were right there by the slaughtered dog.

mondomuttrunner, this happened in northwestern part of the state. douglas county

the thing that really pisses me off though is the usda guy has known about this pack for two years has found there tracks but the dnr wouldn't list it because he couldn't trap one and didn't have enough physical evidence to verify there was a pack... otherwise I would have never even thought about throwing a dog. I looked at there website today and everywhere we hunt everywhere we have baits for years is in the caution area. Looks like ill be moving to a different spot......

dhostetler you said you wanted to know how they act after encountering wolves well my 13 year old hound won't go anymore at the bait. He won't go more then 20 yards from bait. He turns around and tries to load himself back in the box. I'm a firm believer in if you have a good dog you use him or her until the day he or she dies and thats what i've been doing with him before this happened. Its sad it really is.
