How do you judge this lol

Postby treetalkingjp » Mon Oct 14, 2013 1:43 am

Here's a few cases about hounds

Dog 1 : rigs great , you will not drive by any run-able track but you also won't drive by coons , bobcats or coyotes either lol. Trails great but is not always straight on bear . Not very gritty will be at the tree but doesn't tree very hard . Note still really young mid 1s

Dog 2 : hot nosed will not rig, can trail a little . Grittier than dog 1 and trees very very good and is a stay put dog all day . Quiet in box not ill . Mid 4s not trashy at all .

Dog 3 : can trail , can rig but not in style like dog 1, very very gritty . Not trashy at all straight bear . Quiet on chain and box . Not ill mid 3s will bark on tree some ?

Dog 4 : barks in box but will also rig to but doesn't shut up after that , better trail dog than all listed above , not as cold nosed as dog 1 but has a lot more drive and speed on track . Stay put tree dog , not ill mid 3s .

All dogs together will catch a bear but by no means a perfect or even better than average pack ! They will be at the tree but they all have there flaws but catch bear every season.

Dogs 2 and 4 probably wouldn't last too long here. Once you get #1 bent well and solid on tree, I'd send #3 down the road too. Once finished look for more like #1. Never heard of bear dogs that wouldn't tree on a bear, especially if they are older dogs... But if they catch game and you like them, then that's all that matters.

That is why you run packs. Different dogs can help each other. Trailing ability is a lot more important to me than treeing power.

If I had Dog 4 I would keep a shocking collar on him and make him shut up, I definetily wouldn't get rid of him.

Dog 3 might just need more time to tree better, how were his parents on treeing?

Do you need Dog 2 for treeing or why do you still own him? I am not sure what you mean by being grittier than dog 1 if it can only trail a little. My experience with dogs that don't trail well and tree very good are a lot more likely to false tree. Last winter I walked 500 yards to an empty tree and that dog isn't alive anymore. I have zero tolerance for false tree dogs.

Dog #1 and dog #4 might have a chance but #2 and #3 are a little old to be spending 30 to35 dollar a bag dog food on .You can fix the box barking and rigging off game pretty easy but it's hard to teach a dog to track or tree . Most either got it or they don't .

Sounds like a typical average pack for someone who gets out once-twice a week. Probably catches average amount of game. Good starter pack if they are all for sale. Dudes seems like he being quite honest IMO.

Yeah I'm being honest lol they Anit the best all have seen a lot of bears . I gotta work with what I got . I can't buy a good broke dog don't have enough money and in college I don't get out like listed above 1-3 times a week . They will catch bear but they are by no means bear dogs lol and yeah I don't have all the time in the world to give them proper training so if your going to a a$$ don't comment . After I lost my 7 year old my pack hasn't been the same

Well what happens if you get a fighter? Then your pack may be disfunctioal and not work right? I'm not sure if this is correct or not but I was just curious on the scenario.

treetalkingjp: Hunt what you have, improve when you can. They catch game and work as a pack for you and I bet they catch more game then most of the dogs people have that are perfect. Which I have never seen a perfect dog yet. Good hunting Dewey
