i have found most guys that take the piss on curs simply aren't dogmen. a good dogman can switch styles of dogging & be successful (regardless of whether it's curs, terriers, sighthounds, birddogs or anything in between). but not all houndsmen are dogmen, some are too hidebound to change how they do things to fit the different styles of dog and so can only be successful with one style. some doggers are not hunters even though their dogs are. that is they don't know how to find the game w/o the dogs. so if they try to switch styles of dog they can't succeed because they don't know how to hunt in the way that will make the dog successful.

You sure sound professional lifreediver. I'm sure you looked up Don Page as well. I didn't tell you anything about my dogs so why are you assuming things about em. I might have a kennel full of curs. Anyhow since you don't want to call Don Page or cannot find his phone number, I'll give it to you. If you call him and harass him, I'll invite your bad ass to Idaho. You seem to think cur guys need to prove something to you, why don't you prove something to them. Here you go Don Page 208-365-3741.

I have hounds and will probably always have them. I'm always interested in seeing what else is out there. I met Don and he can catch bears. I tried a stephens cur out and I'll admit I like a dog to put his nose down and hunt. That dog didn't and I'm not one to take time with a pup in that area. I want instinct to show and I want it to be strong in that area. I also like an early starter. That cur was not. Anyways lifreediver I wouldn't mind having you come hunt bears with me. I have hunts in California and I'm out there every year as well as training most the spring, summer and fall here in Idaho. If you draw out for Idaho's nonresident hound persuit than come on out. We can go hunt and I know where Don camps and you can see the old curs in action. Or just have fun hunting the hounds with me.

[quote="depends on the dog. if you expect a sighthound to run a track you're going to fail at catching game with them. likewise if you expect a cur or terrier to run the same track as your cold nosed cathounds you're going to fail at catching game with them. whether or not you catch more game is also dependant. there are guys w/ stags that catch more coyotes than the guys running foxhounds in the same area and they quite literally HAVE to show them the game. likewise running open mouth hounds in TX for hogs will net you empty freezers & shot dogs more often than not. so yeah if a dogger doesn't know the game & the area well enough to put the dog on a track it can work then they are going to be disappointed in their performance. likewise if a person buys curs that are nothing but 10 generations of squirrell dogs and expects them to bring the heat to push a bear up a tree or stop a hog, they are going to be disappointed.
right now i got a dane that will work on sight like my greyhound and works the wind like a pointer. she has a ton of want to and gives an honest effort every time. so far she has only taken coon & coyote and nearly yanked my arm out trying to run the neighborhood cats. w/ a little work & some time she may even wind up running a hot track. my problem is that i'm new to the dry west and finding a cat track warm enough for her will be difficult until I learn more about the game and how it lives in the area.[/quote]

I like the way you think!

I had a mt.cur gyp that was a good pack dog with lots of grit so I decided to cross her with my sons bluetick and they turned out to be track running machines, alot colder nosed than their mother but has her grit, not afraid of a mean bear.

I'd would venture to say that there aren't alot of all cur packs for bear out there. Depending on what type of cur your talking about. Your purebred Blackmouth Curs and Mountain curs and not going to start a 12 hour old bear. Hell they won't even start an hour old bear. It's either a hot track that the bear just stepped out of or their not going on it. They are not cold nosed dogs. Some folks dump the curs in after the bear has been jumped to push them up a tree. i don't know what kinda curs u talkin bout but i hunted curs for 16 years on hogs and they might not be able to jump a 12 hr bear but i've had a bunch that would smoke a pretty old track. i've personally watched black mouth curs run 4 hour tracks very fast and jump quickly. 12 hour bear gonna give alot hounds problems also, but i'm sure those hounds u follow make that look pretty easy.

these guys bashin curs never been in the woods with one they just think they know it all. i've hunted with both in the same pack most my life and when i start countin "jumps" i can't really honestly say which gets in done more often on hogs. and jumping the game is what its all about. curs and hounds both have their own unique traits thats what makes them what they are to sit here and say that one or the other can't do what my dogs can do is kinda silly. my daddy can beat up your daddy. lol.......

I too have seen Paiges cur dogs in action. Make no mistake they get it done, generally pretty fast. If anybody on that mountain is going to catch a bear, its Don. A kinder man you will not meet.

I am thinking about getting into hound hunting and wondering what kind of dog to start out with. I have done some research on curs, but now I'm thinking about Plott hounds. I live in MN and can only run coons, but WI is right across the way so I can run bears. Anyone have some advice to point me in the right direction? Any little bit helps right now! Thanx.
