i like to have all truck to tree dogs in my pack. but i have had a dog where he could not stand to be behind he would try to start another track by himself and would refuse to not follow with others. he was almost to independent for my pack. i have 2 dogs that will start and finish and one pack dog. when i say pack dog i mean he will go anywhere and anytime with any dog. does not care front or back. i almost sold him because he wont start a track by i have seen him as close to a bear or a lion in bay ups as my best dogs. i think it takes a lot of time to find a pack that works well together.

I have not seen but a few times where dumping fresh dogs in does much good. I know that my dogs that are on start to finish on a runner still finish first at catch or tree even after fresh ones are in . I had this happen about 3 years back and I had 3 dogs on a runner from start and they ran it for about 8 hours before it bayed up dogs got dumped in and wore out the whole day that bear got put down while bayed 10 hours into the deal my three were still there with only one other buddies dog that was thrown in at the end. What I am saying is with the right kind of dogs that are in shape don't need help they will get it done. this is why I want all my dogs top notch . it took me years to get what I got it took some hard culling but if you want something bad enough you will get it.
Hunt hard cull hard !

In a perfect world, with good dogs, I'd dump the box at the strike. Otherwise, I will put out one or two dogs that I trust and, when I know they are going to take it, I'll throw in the pups. If I have 3 or 4 that I trust, I'll drop them at the strike and follow with pups. I have never had any luck turning pack dogs in. For some reason, it always turns into some kind of hassle and I, like others have said, want my younger dogs to get the full experience from truck to tree. I do not like having dogs that have holes in them but, stuff happens and I find myself lacking in certain areas at times(a lot of times it seems :D ) and, if I have to, I'll fill their void with a dog that has what they are lacking until I have a more complete dog but I will be doing everything I can to make a more complete dog at that time, as well.
