Sheimer, If your thinking about suggesting a control hunt has way to get a season, may I highly suggest it's not a good thing. Has you can see it's confusing and it's totally unfair to most that don't draw. The quota system I would personally think would be much better. We have them for Loins. They allow everyone to hunt until a certain number is taken, females for loin. They also allow good management practices to be followed also.

Catch, I got a interpretation of what Idaho considers "Party Hunting" along time ago, but haven't had a chance to tell you about it. Party Hunting in Idaho is defined has when one hunter or group of hunters fills another hunters tag for them. If you took me hunting and filled my tag for me, that's Party Hunting. There's absolutely no law and there's nothing wrong if any of us catch a animal for another has long has the tag holder and the person that tags it kills it, if it is taken. That is unless we're talking about the Bear Study area's. And that's the law you just mentioned. It's very vague and we got mixed interpretations of it, even from several of the F&G people we talked too.

Mr. Fisher, I was not thinking of a "control hunt". I am sugessting that we stick to the quota system that is currently in place, just adding the use of hounds to it. My vision of a bear season is just what we have for lions in my area. I purchase a tag and along with it comes a "hound handlers permit" which allows me to chase even after my tag has been filled until the chase season is over. If I chose not to buy a tag, I can purchase a "resident hound training liscense" which allows me to pursue in any open district.

thanks,

scott

From my understanding, anything goes if you are a "native". I've heard stories about people gong to the res. to chase bear and was told if you had a native with you, it was OK. I've also heard that the locals changed their mind part way through the chase and the hound handler was up the creek dealing with the BIA on his own. I do not want to be that guy. I don't believe that the FWP has any control over any of the Reservations in Montana, the tribal councel and the BIA have control.

I personally would rather just have a legal chase season that I could run my dogs in. I am a little to chicken to push the boundries of the law on the Reservation.

after this same kinda deal a year or two back about a WY hunter bragging about bear hounding the Crow reseservation with a tribal member, I was told by the head tribal game warden, no, memeber or not. but what you hear over the phone and what actualy happens on the ground is another matter. Im with sheimer, I wouldent want to be caught breaking any game laws on a indian reservation. Any non member game violation on a reservation is a fedral offence.

I was just reading the post about the California DFG changing their season and saw this quote- "I know a lot of us would be willing to pay the same price for a pursuit permit as we do for the Bear tag, they could even require a catch log to help with there bear studies.". I havn't heard of a "catch log" before, but it sounds like a good idea to me. Could possibly sweeten the deal for us to get a season here. I would be willing to spend a little on a chase permit as well - considering what it would cost for me to go to another state to run my dogs or send them to someone else to run for me.

What are your thoughts?

I talked to the guy I mentioned in my previous post more about this today. He just laughed and said if hounds men were really smart they would spend there money on other things like retirements and not hound stuff. He also said it probably wouldn't happen because we cant stick together to reach 1 common goal. To much bickering going on. We would have had it years ago but we still haven't learned.

We got a call at 11:30 from a friend that found a tom track so we called him and went over and put up a nice tom. The young cat was around 120 to 130 and should make a good trophy in a few years. This story go's back to what he said about hounds men being smart

One more thing this guy said was, way to many people running culls.

Didn't we have a chase season up to about the mid or early 80's?? What happened to it anyway?
