Every bear is differnt lots of people think dogs that walk and bay a bear are great bay dogs. I've seen tons of bay ups in tight brush and let me just say when a bear shows any kind of weakness dogs know it and capitalize on it. When u get after one that runs a dog for fifty yards in the brush and really tries to catch a dog those are the Bears to judge a real bear dog on I no longer hunt Bears but will have to say I have owned lots of great bear dogs that aren't around today due to bad bears but in twenty years of bear hunting I've seen weekness out of every dog I ever owned in my life at one time or another except for one and lots of those dogs eventually became gritty dogs once they learned how to deal with bad situations. The country u hunt and the bears that u run has everything to do with what shows a great bear dog.a few of u on this post know some of my old dogs bear, gator, shorty,Ike,daisy, tipper, evey one of those dogs except gator showed weekness on a bay up at one time or another.i will say I had a lot of fun bear hunting for all those years and that's what really matters

If you own a bear dog that will pull hair out of every bear it runs you really got a one of a kind, hold on to that dog. many great dogs wont get but just a few feet from a mean bear. I think a true bear dog knows how to push a bear when it counts and that's how you catch lots of bears. also the guys that catch lots of bears have a pack of dogs that all work together on a mean bear, they know what they are doing and as a pack how to push a bear just right to make him get up a tree of bay up sold on the ground.. even still you will find them bears that keep moving because they have seen a hound or twenty in there life...

Walkers, Plots, Red ticks, Blue ticks, Red bone, Line breed, Papered, Grade, Cross breed, pick your poison you can find a good bear dog from any of the above. I prefer walkers they just work the best all around for me, but I have owned all of the above.

Good luck with your quest. :beer
