Hi everyone this is my first time on here. I am looking at getting into hunting bears with hounds but had a few questions. First I live in Alaska you can get a permit here however you can only take black bears with hounds my question is can you train your hound not to go for brown bears. and second how many of you guys lose a dog from the bear killing it or how often do the dogs need to go to the vet because of the bear getting your dog.
Thanks everyone

hello,
i to live in alaska now and have a hound permit for bear? to awnser your question. yes. my dogs are broke off of grizzly. they do smell different than black bear. and the dog learn it very fast. I was an outfitter in nevada for 10 yrs and guided lion hunts on the dry ground. in nevada a non resident cant kill a bobcat. so i had to break my dogs off bobcat. but still run lions. anyway its the same basic principle. and really most dogs after they run a griz or 2 and cetch them they dont want anything to do with them anyway. where at in alaska are you located? I live outside of palmer? we should get together this spring and do some hunting.

I live in North Birchwood I have never done black bear hunting with hounds but would like to see what its all about and maybe get some hounds of my own if the wife would let me. Just send me a massage come spring time.

"if the wife would let me"
If you want to be a houndsman and you are starting out on that note, I suggest you just give up the whole idea right now.

just break her in gently, it has been my experience that its not the dogs that bother them much, its the fact that we pay more attention to the dogs than we do them. and some of them don't care for the fact that now and then we use the dinning room table for an operating table to give stitches and dress wounds, or pull porcupine quills. one thing i do know for sure. woman are a dime a dozen but really good dogs are few and far between,
i went through 3 before i found one that could live with the dogs.
i would rather beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. and no woman alive can say no to a hound pup, once she sees it.

My husbands the Golden Child I guess..I'M the one who said lets get a dog and hunt!
We both enjoy expensive hobbies, I THANKFULLY got him away from his and into mine LOL. Chasing dogs and driving 40+ miles in a day never leaving a 45 min radius is far more entraining to me than driving in some rock crawling event hoping to win money to fix the parts you broke to win the money. EVEN THOUGH some places we go we break things LOL..BUT its doing what I want to do so it makes it OK

(yes guys I help rebuild and fix the things we break, I'm not completely cruel)
Of course credit is due to the Best Friend who got it all started..without her help it would of been hard to convince him to let ME get a dog.. (the 2 house dogs didn't count)

I stumbeled into the best deal yet, met my wife at a field trial in 1989, a year later got married on a Saturday and went to a field trial on that Sunday, her Dad's had hounds all her life, she was only 8 months old when she went to her first field trial and we've been married now for almost 22 years and getting ready for Elk Creek.
