I drew a spring bear tag for sled springs chesnimus unit in ne oregon. If anybody has any information about a good place to start would be great. Cant run them so it will be spot and stalk only. I deer hunted sled springs last year but hunted white tails in wheat fields. So i dont know any of the units

Snow always plays a role pertaining to access in that country followed up by private ownership issues. If you hunt any of those units. The Whitetail you hunted was probably off the North hwy 3 close to Flora?
Bear hunting, I would Start in the town of Wallowa. As you leave town heading towards Lostine you will see a road turning off to the left Just beyond Wallowa food city market called Whisky creek.

Follow it on out towards Sherod meadows on the powwatka road. You will gain elevation and once on top you will encounter some signs belonging to a not so friendly owner of Shilo inns by the name of Mark Hempstreet. Once you hit his line stating surveillance cameras/ armed guards etc. Just turn around and drive down and dive in to the canyon facing towards the east(left). You will need a gun capable of shooting a good distance and glass the slopes and you will see a bear.

Look for open exposure areas with green grass.

The chesnim is the same. Lots of private property and snow will be you problem there as well. Red hill is another area off the North highway 3 leaving Enterprise going towards Lewiston Idaho and you will see signs heading East, that is the 46 road. Starvation springs road. Turn right off highway and follow your maps.

Prior to the ban back in the early 90's, I and a Wallowa rancher friend would drive up and glass that drainage on the east side off Powwatka rd. He killed a bear every spring in that canyon. You walk just a few hundred yards to start glassing. You can just move down the ridge without having to work real hard until you pull the trigger. Good optics are a must and a frying pan to cook what you kill! Dirty steep....Good Luck!
