A good friend of mine has a blue tick/ walker mix , he is a jam up little dog on bear for his age ( 1 1/2) but he shattered his leg. He is recovered good! I've liked this dog from the start, well stocky 85 pound dog . He offered it to me for free , I want it but he told me after the leg it's hard for him to keep up with the hounds , I've owned alot alot of dogs but what's your opinion on that leg ? You think it will get better ?, most of my old dogs has got well and hunted normal after a broken leg , .but I don't want to take a dog that's leg is that bad off since he can't keep up.

If you want another dog to catch bear find one with four good legs. You don't want a slow dog at the front of your pack. If he makes it to tree first you wouldn't know what to do with the rest of the pack. Let a coon hunter leisure hunt him. I have never seen a shattered leg dog with any place in a bear pack and I have seen a few lose there job that way. Unless You need a mascot.

Shattered n broken r to different things. That's a lot of weigh to haul around after a shattered leg. I'd b after somethin with 4 good legs n 20-30 less pounds

I might find a kid that could make a coon dog out of him for fun.

I have a 6 year old dog that last fall got her hip broken and she recovered after I spent a $1,000.00 on her. She was always one of my slower dogs, so I can't really say if she is slower or not since that happened. She is a very good start dog off a strike and she has treed her own bears by herself on split races. Though she is one of my slower dogs she is one of my best bear dogs. Speed is an important ingredient in a bear pack but not the most important. I would take the free dog and try him for a year. If he is doing good at 1 1/2 he is young enough to get better and also young enough to heal more.

I have a dog that got bit by a wounded lion and pretty much broke his lower leg in half. Compound fracture. I put the pieces back together the best I could and 70 staples to put the hide back on. A good splint and alot of duck tape. It took this two year old dog a year and a half before he stopped limping but is still one of my fastest dogs now that he is 5.

I just spent a week hunting bear in B.C. with a treeing walker that was hit by a car and broke its pelvis. This looked pretty bad for the dog and was real close to being put down. I would suggest giving the dog some time to heal and hunt the dog, these hounds are pretty tough and resilient.

If you see the dog can do what is expected of it within reason, try some dietary supplement called recovery powder for dogs. This will encourage joint health. I'm amazed by how well this hound recovered and to watch this dog hunt today....Wow, is all I can say. I'm sure glad his owner give the dog some time....He is a cool dog that takes out his aggressions on every bear he runs....You can still see the injured hip that waddles as the dog walks.....Good luck!

my all time best hound I have ever owned broke her broke her foot and leg at about 6 months old. I almost put her down. glad I didn't.
