I went out yesterday with my dogs just to see if we could rig a bear. I had a dog open hard from the box and we found a track. My question is, how old of a scent trail can the dogs rig from the box on? The dog that rigged has opened on a 23hr old lion track in the past. (Pic of lion in trailcam.)

depends on the scenting conditions. I've seen my best rig dog miss a track that was only hrs old because the wind is wrong. found the track by looking out the window. couldn't get it going that day. next morning the dogs blew the top off the box in the same spot and I couldn't find a new track.????? it's different every time

I've Had Dogs Hit Hard On A Track But It Was LA SO We went back to camp the next day about 12 hrs later they still hit it and ended up teeing the bear hours later. Hope this helps

23 hour old lion track?? Did you catch the lion? I always kind of question the basis of using trail cam pictures. That lion may have been hanging around and just not triggered the camera again. Or another lion may have come though later not triggering the camera.

I don't know,lot of people run day old tracks in the snow.

Maybe he opened on the track and didn't actually strike it, the post isn't to clear. Yes you can run lion tracks in the snow that is multiple days old.

One time I went up a road and the dog never struck, then came back down maybe 15 minutes later and she blew up on a track. Still dk what that was about. Guess it was just the wind

If a dog strikes for me u can kinda tell the age of scent by the strike. Had a strike yesterday my dogs and a couple friends they were wondering why I wasn't putting dogs down. So I let a lead dog out she mill around opening and was getting sent but wouldn't move it. We drove for another half hour same dog struck and lost its mind. My buddy's laoughed and said oh we will be chasing now. I dumped the box and off they went. Listen to your dogs they will tell u how fresh the scent is.

I have had that happen a few times going up a road without a strike, turn around and come back and strike redhot. I believe a laid up bear doesn't give off much scent and what can happen is you drive up the road you spook him out of there and when you come back through the scent has had time to settle or drift to the road.
