Oregon Black Bear Harvest-2013

Postby mike martell » Tue May 20, 2014 2:46 am

2013 Black Bear Harvest numbers are in and broken down by category.
Annual total combined Bears Harvested...1,569

Sport Boot Hunters Harvested-- 1241 Total

Oregon State Police Harvested --6

ODFW Harvested-- 33

Landowner /contractors, mainly comprised of snares--131 Total

USDA-Aphis Wildlife Services snared-- 185 Bears.... First year baby cubs are no longer being documented as having been born....355 Conflict Bears and if one half were sows with first year cubs, you could have around 50-75 possible ten pound baby cubs.
The real numbers will never be known. Why? They were all shot and buried according to reports from Thomas Thornton Game Program Manager with ODFW since they weigh as little as 10# during their first snare season.

How does this constitute anything other than eradication? I think it is more like failure to manage the resources that belong to we the people of the State of Oregon.....Snare your breeding stock and kill 100% of your sows & cubs....Last years aging reports indicate in the South Santiam drainage, the average sow aged @ 3 years (divide total sows by total sow years) Black bears become of breeding age when?

Pretty hard to keep justifying this killing pattern when the age profile keeps dropping in the high density contractor locations....Luckily, there is a vast area off limits to access and the only reason these numbers maintain. Now if this were all of us and our Bobcat quotas vs. Government/ contractor killing? Well you know the answer to that....ODFW will hammer us on our bobcat harvest and turn a blind eye to their own antics that sucks way worse than bobcat numbers! Pretty good argument for failure to properly manage the resource can be made!

How is it our State lobbyist can't defend a bear hound that allows for selecting the sex of the animal and the ability to walk away vs. a rank beef head tied over a cubby set with an ankle catch throw arm snare that doesn't discriminate against what it catches? About every One in four bears in Oregon are killed by Snares. Kill all your sows and cubs on this 25% over time and you get what?

Both the snare and hound are described as management tools...Which one would be the easier sell? Sadly, there is a popular saying that originated right here...You don't know what you don't know.....

Jim

Most hound hunters think we have a problem with HSUS....... We have a Government problem first and failure to manage the resources in all three States should be Game on for law suits. File against our perspective game departments, screw fighting the HSUS, one is internal and the other external and no difference. HSUS could care less about all animals dying and the only objective is the complete elimination of all sport hunting......How is it provisions are in place to allow each perspective game department to manage the resources?...Look at your cougar...... Instead of hiring lobbyist in each State? Use the same money and file law suits in all three States. Many of the rank and file influential policy makers are radicals infiltrated from the ground up. Liberal Governors also appoint liberal Directors.
