Any Fellow Alaskan houndsmen here?

Postby AK Zach » Wed Jun 18, 2014 2:43 am

I am new to site and new to alaska as well. Brought my redbone up from ga, recently got a permit to run bear with dogs. just wondering if there was anyone else up here who'd be willing to let my dog run with theirs. Been trashing a lot on moose since we got up here, so any help would be appreciated.

Easttn, my experience is not that great as I hve Olympic been here since jan. I did grow up running coons in western nc and southern ga. I can tell you this: roads are few and far between. Hardley any chance of rigging. All hunting is on foot, so most times I try to find a track to turn my dogs loose on, otherwise, my redbone will hunt random animals, especially moose haha. The woods are thick here, very thick. A lot harder to run through than nc mountains and ga swamps. plenty of bears to go around here. When I got my permit I was told I am one of the few in the region that hunts with hounds. I have met one other man who runs dogs, but he has a Karelian bear dog an an Akita, still curious to see those breeds operate on a bear. Also have to watch out for grizz, but for the most part they stay out of the woods and in the more open tundra, so I try to keep my dogs away from those areas.

Tom, I had to get permission from the regional wildlife biologist here, which consisted of a short interview. I tried to get the whole unit of 20, (fairbanks and surrounding areas)) but they only gave me one for subunits 20a and 20b. (Which is still pretty large area, I'll take what they give me). Alaska is a 5 black bear a year state, but my units only allow 3 per year, I can hunt the other two to fill my bag limit without dogs in other units. A lot of people bait up here, but hardly anyone uses dogs. I can only run bear with dogs from April 1 to oct 31. Also, I cannot let them go within a mile of any residence. Cannot have more than three dogs on a trail simultaneously. If more than three, they have to be leashed. Once a bear is trees, cornered or caught it must be harvested or let go with dogs leashed an not in pursuit. So more or less I can run as many bears as I want, just hve to let them go, so "training" season like some states have. Also, no brown bear, blackies only. At end of year in dec I have to report directly to regional wildlife biologist, and report years hunting results. That's it!

Zach, I P.M'd you. Most of the area Bios in Alaska allow up to 6 hounds on a bear, and also most northern states use 6 as the maximum hounds on the ground-have him call Boyd Porter, ADF&G in Ketchikan- he's permitted me for quite a few years now with no problems. It's a good law, too many dogs and they get tangled up shoulder to shoulder on a bay-up in this thick stuff. I usually only hunt 2 or 3 hounds but that's all I got. My friend Mike comes up most years from Arkansas bringing a dog or two and 4 to six dogs are pretty good. No dogs get hit even with nose to nose bay-ups, everyone has room to manouver.
