gritty hounds

whats a good blood line of gritty hounds? I hunt walkers redticks an b&ts now no registered dogs just a good dog bred to a good dog. picked up aplott stay on a bear on the ground but wont tree is that for a plott? don't have time for me 2 dogs. want pick hair out their teeth at the end of the day.

Most gritty dogs I've had are airedale/walker crosses. Insanely gritty. The man I get them from had a pack of them that would stretch out a good sized bear on the ground and hold them like a hog. I am also running some catahoulas and leopard hounds that are pretty young still but showing good promise. I have a couple that are 2 months old and already trying to bite coons.

I own a Airedale plot cross he's 13 he's retired used to be very gritty not much mouth tho. the walkers are sackett bred im not colorblind to any good dog. never have been plot crazy an this young one I have now makes me more agitated with them.

those terriers are gritty, I have 2 ursus plot pups that I be starting on coon. at 2 months I showed them a caged coon and they wanted it. gonna run them with my duane smith plot on coon then let them catch a few..

I'm not color blind to any good hound iv just never had any luck with a plott

i have 4 plotts and they will all pull hair. if its a bear or a lion it dont matter i have seen it on bay ups first hand.

Not many dogs won't pull hair on a lion, bears are a different story.
I wouldn't want to aggressive of dogs on bears if you are hunting abunch. YOu will spend alot more on vet bills thats foresure and have lots of down time with healing dogs. I am content catching 85% of the bears I turn out on, it seems to keep the catch ratio to vet bills about right. I expect any 3 dogs in my kennel to maintain that average year in and year out. What i want to see is the the bear at a full run crossing the road, if the bear is walking ,it better have dogs all around it trying to stop it. I laugh everytime I see the bear cross and some guys dogs are 30 seconds behind ,some even more.I would expect that out of an old broken down dog but that is about it.

I hunt a big mix of dogs, quite afew cur/hound crosses they all must have speed and run with their head up.

Many dogs are gritty in company!!!Lots of cheerleaders are tough when a tough dogs get in there!To judge the grit or sand in your dog try him alone on a yote or a big boar hog,you will find out who is a bay dog and who is gritty .If you watch most hog tapes most dogs are baying the hog till the catch dog gets there then the get tough!I have 3 that will bite anything they catch,lion,bear,hogs,or yotes and they do get cut a lot!But they make the tough races a lot shorter.

that's true I like to see how long a single hound wilk walk or bay by itself. but that's a good way for them to get whipped out. theres probably at least one cheerleader in every pack. where we hunt theres a lot of hunting pressure so speed is a big deal to but what good is speed if they're to scared to get um a mouth full when they catch up to him

Speed and teeth that what I want in a bear or hog dog.I have a little dog that has seen maybe 200 plus bear,she is not gritty.She will bite when my other do and only on the rear.She will stay with a walking bear but will only bite it when the gritty dogs do,she is a cheerleader!She is a great tree and rig dog and a great start dog.I keep her because she is also very good on lions also.Lucky for me she is not the fastest dog in my pack!!

She sounds like she holds her value though she may not pull hair but sounds like she's worth her food

How many of you guys have actually seen your dogs pull hair on a bear on a bayup. Bears coming out of a tree and the dogs grabbing it or trying to grab it is a whole different story than a ground fight. I have been on a lot of bay ups and have seen that happen very very seldom. I don't consider mine to be hair pullers but I have had enough vet bills over the years to know that they gotten to close already.

This is how I like a bayup. If they would've been pulling hair they might have gotten him to climb, or I could have a dead dog or a $1,000.00 vet bill. They held him till I got there and I could've shot him so I consider that a caught bear.
