Opening day!

Well mother nature failed to be informed that today was the first day in over 100 years you could chase a bear in montana with hounds. It was -2 and there was almost 2 feet of new snow. It was tough getting around to say the least. We finally found a day old track in a mountain range that was missed by the storm but it was a day old. I put the dogs out and they ran it well until it hit the burned off south face with Nothing but mud and flowing water from melting snow but still felt great to be legally turned out on a bear. Haven't heard of anyone who was successful today but hopefully tomorrow is a better day !

Glad you guys got a season, I never would of bet in 100 years that any state would ever open up a hound season for bears that had previously been closed to it.
How long does the season run? Are non residents allowed? I haven't saw all the regs on it.

From what I read yes nonresidents can run if they get a hound permit but you had to apply for it by March 25th or the end of March. The kill season runs until the 25th of May but then the training season goes the 26th-15th or so of June. Also seems like there is some nonresident training license quotas for some areas and made a reference between a nonresident just having a training license for a kill license. Still looking into it all the regs myself might just have to call to get a better understanding especially since some areas say max nonresident training permits 2. Will be following for more info definitely interested

Congratulations! Hope everything works out and you keep that opportunity for many years to come. I am sure it took many dedicated workers to get your season reinstated while there were a lot of cheerleaders on the sidelines waiting for the chance to go but not contributing much. Always a crowd waiting in every state for a few to make things happen but at least your efforts paid off. Congrats again!

First time I've ever been there, we started the race about 300 yards from the mountain in a willow choked pasture. There honestly weren't many trees at all but thankfully he headed to a north face with old growth fur trees, 40 more yards and no trees for half a mile.

Had a marathon of a day yesterday, left the house at 430am got home at midnight. Turned out around 745 on a half ass strike by 1 of my buddies dogs, dogs ran the track about 200 yards backwards then got it turned around. 15 miles later only had 2 of my young dogs left in it. Around 1pm they bayed him in a cave in cliffs. Hiked 3 and a half miles into them only to be completely cliffed out 120 yards from them. After an hour of rain the boys had enough and somehow found their way down off of the ledges to us.
