Should I make the cross

Postby dpetty » Wed Jun 30, 2010 12:44 pm

I am running a Plott female and considering her for breeding but I am not sure to cross her to a bmc or back to her line of Plotts. I would prefer dogs that don't open but I am OK running open mouth dogs with my Jagd. As time passes after my Jagd gets older I want to run two of them with either the cross or one of the Plott pups.

This is the dilemma I need to get rid of the rest of the pups and I wonder with hog dog mom breeding to hog dog bmc or Big Game Plott dad after keeping my pick which would go better? Any thoughts would help.

If you dont seem to care about open or silent trailing I personally would just breed my dog to the one that hunts the best from the selection you have to chose from. In regards to your delema having extra dogs and getting them to homes. I have always asked around and had a few pups reserved before they were born. I think in terms of which breed or cross of would be easier to find homes for the purebred ones will find homes easier. Wether they go to hunters or as pets. But thats just me.

Personally, I prefer a plott/cur(BMC or Catahoula) cross to a purebred plott. Given how unpopular my opinion generally is with the members of this board, that probably means you had better go with the purebred plotts. If you do decide to go with a plott/cur cross, give me a call when you are ready to get rid of some of them. I don't need any dogs now, but that could change in a couple of months.

good luck whichever way you go.

alot of good plott x cur out there. If she comes from good lines breed her back to where she comes from. That way you get a better Idea of how the pups will come out.

Most of my dogs are plott x cur, Plott x cat. I have 1 Pure plott I perfer the crossed plotts simply because of the tight mouth. I got lucky with my pure plott she is completley silent on track and only barks when she is looking at a hog, she barks when the hog breaks but only if she can see his rear end. With any 1/2 hound cross the odds of getting pups that are open on track are 50/50. I dont mind an open dog at all so either way will be good, if she has a great blood line and is a great hog dog breed her to another great dog not some common dog. Great dogs have a better chance to make great dogs and less culls. JMO
